Tigers to be without righty Reese Olson for some time

It's been a great season for the Detroit Tigers so far in 2025, but they've hit another bump in the road as it relates to the starting rotation, which has long been a strong point for Detroit.

Right-handed starter Reese Olson has been added to the 15-day IL due to right finger inflammation.

This past weekend, he left a 2-1 loss to the Toronto Blue Jays due to finger soreness. It's a shame, too, because he was "on one" in that contest. When he left, he had given up just one hit in six innings of shutout baseball.

The move to the IL means he'll miss at least his next two scheduled starts, and on Monday, manager A.J. Hinch was clear that the Tigers aren't in the mood to rush Olson back.

"We're certainly not going to send Reese into a game without his full arsenal," Hinch said, according to ESPN. "And we'll have a further update whenever I get it. But it's not going to be this series for Reese anyway, and now we have an extra reliever."

The Tigers will have a bullpen day on Wednesday against the St. Louis Cardinals and Jack Flaherty is being moved back a day to start Detroit's series opener against the Cleveland Guardians at home on Thursday.

In a corresponding move to sending Olson to the IL, reliever Chase Lee was brought up from Triple-A Toledo.

Olson has started nine games this season, and he boasts a 4-3 record with a 2.96 ERA and 51 strikeouts.
