Michigan lands commitment from 2026 four-star TE Matt Ludwig

Michigan had made tight end Matt Ludwig a top priority on the recruiting trail, and that special attention from head coach Sherrone Moore and his staff has paid off for the Wolverines.

With an offer list that also included schools like Notre Dame, Georgia, Tennessee, Texas A&M and Texas Tech, Ludwig committed to the Wolverines on Tuesday.

“It really came down to the personal feel at Michigan,” Ludwig told Steve Wiltfong of On3 regarding his decision.

Michigan had the Billings, Montana tight end on campus several times after offering him in April 2024. Both tight ends coach Steve Casula and Moore himself were actively involved in the recruiting process with Ludwig.

“Just the family feel and how important they made me feel and how big a priority they made me throughout this recruiting process,” Ludwig explained, giving another reason why he chose the Wolverines. “The relationship I do have with Sherrone Moore, Steve Casula and the rest of the staff.”

Ludwig is a big-time pickup for the Wolverines. He's a 6-foot-4, 240 pound tight end who is ranked as the No. 11 player at his position in the 2026 class, according to the 247Sports Composite.

He caught 53 passes for 822 yards and four touchdowns as a junior for Billings West, averaging 15.5 yards per catch. Notably, 247Sports recruiting analyst Greg Biggins thinks Ludwig is a generational talent to come out of the state of Montana.

"Ludwig is arguably the best prospect to come out of the Big Sky State in the last decade if not longer," he wrote in a scouting report. "He projects as a high Power 4 prospect and someone with a definite NFL ceiling to him."
