Emma Navarro broke out when she made the semifinal at the 2024 U.S. Open. However, stardom can be fleeting.
On Monday, unseeded Spaniard Jessica Bouzas Maneiro shocked No. 9 seed Navarro in the first round of the French Open, beating her 6-0, 6-1 in 57 minutes. Last year, the 24-year-old American reached the fourth round of the clay-court tournament at Roland-Garros.

Even more concerning for Navarro, Bouzas Maneiro outclassed her throughout the match. The American had four double faults and won 44 percent of the time on her first serve and 22 percent on her second serve.
In an interview after the match, Bouzas Maneiro seemed surprised she had won it easily.
"I didn't expect the result but I always try to play at my best, and I think everything is possible," Bouzas Maneiro said, per the Associated Press. "I feel good playing on clay, and winning here at Roland-Garros is so special to me."
Navarro is 17-13 in 2025 after her first-round loss at the French Open. She won the singles title at the Merida Open in Mexico in March but has cooled since then. She didn't make it to the semifinals in her past eight tournaments. She also lost to Briton Emma Raducanu in the round of 64 at the Miami Open.
In 2024, Navarro went 54-24. Attribute her drop-off to her inability to win service games. Last season, she won a career-best 70.1 percent of her service games. Through her first 30 matches this season, she has captured 63.8 percent of her service games.
Navarro still has plenty of time to regroup before Wimbledon starts on June 30, but she must address the holes in her game. Otherwise, her success could be short-lived.
