Paige Bueckers makes history with impressive start to WNBA career

After seeing a historic rookie season from Caitlin Clark last year, many anxiously awaited to see if Paige Bueckers could deliver similar results. Through the first two weeks of her pro career, the former UConn star has lived up to expectations.

Last week, Bueckers got to showcase her talents in her hometown against the Minnesota Lynx. On Tuesday night, she found herself with another homecoming. The Dallas Wings guard got to play in front of fans in Connecticut again for the first time since leaving the Huskies this spring.

Similar to her return to Minnesota, Bueckers did not let this opportunity go to waste. She put together the best showing of her WNBA career thus far, erupting for 21 points, five rebounds and seven assists on stellar 8-of-10 shooting from the field. This showing was a driving force in the Wings picking up their first win of the 2025 season.

Along with continuing to shine since being taken first overall in the 2025 draft, Bueckers has worked her way into the history books. She is now the first player in league history to record at least 60 points and 30 assists through their first five games.

Coming out of UConn, many argued that Bueckers is just as skilled as Clark and could have a similar impact from day one. Now setting her own records, the Wings guard is wasting no time making noise in the WNBA.

Overall, seeing another top pick come in and shine is great for the long-term trajectory of the WNBA. The league is in the midst of a rapid growth period with popularity growing by the day. With young players like Bueckers and Clark continuing to stand out, the WNBA has promising talents capable of leading the next generation.

Fresh off winning a national championship at UConn, Bueckers entered the WNBA with lofty expectations of her own. This doesn't seem to have fazed her, as she adjusted to competing at the pro level nicely. While Bueckers has succeeded in laying the groundwork, the key for her will be building off this momentum in the coming months as she navigates her first year in the WNBA.
