Heading into this offseason, the San Antonio Spurs are among the most interesting teams to keep an eye on. Armed with high-level talent and a bevy of assets, they are in a position to swing a big move that could instantly put them in the title conversation.
The Spurs made a notable upgrade at this year's deadline, acquiring De'Aaron Fox from the Sacramento Kings. With Victor Wembanyama, this gives the organization a pair of All-Star-level players to build out around moving forward. San Antonio also still has a good influx of youth coming in, as they currently have two lottery picks in the 2025 NBA Draft.
On Tuesday afternoon, NBA insider Shams Charania appeared on "The Pat McAfee Show" to discuss an array of topics. Among the things to come up was the Spurs and the pool of assets at their disposal. While bringing up possible moves, he linked them to a former MVP.
"I think a Kevin Durant is another guy," Charania said. "There was mutually interest at the deadline. I think they're gonna be looking very actively to see is there a wing player we can bring in that can take us over the top."
"The Spurs fully expect Wemby to be ready to go for the start of training camp..

Durant is someone who could make a lot of sense for the Spurs. For starters, he is still a high-level offensive talent in this league. More importantly, KD can put up big scoring numbers while not commanding a lot of touches. This allows the Spurs to fully showcase the duo of Fox and Wembanyama.
Though he hasn't been to the mountaintop in seven years, Durant has playoff and championship experience. He understands what is needed to win at the highest level, and is someone who could help elevate the Spurs as they look to contend.
The driving factor in Durant being a good candidate for the Spurs is his perimeter play. Wembanyama is at his best when utilizing his size around the rim, and Fox is primarily a downhill threat. San Antonio needs someone who can space the floor on the outside, and Durant could be that answer in the short term.
Ultimately a deal like this all comes down to what the Phoenix Suns want in exchange for Durant. That said, if the asking price is reasonable, it's a move strongly worth considering for the Spurs. KD is someone who could easily slot into San Antonio as his career slowly fades off into the sunset.
