The Toronto Maple Leafs and Philadelphia Flyers made one trade at the deadline, but now we know the details of a blockbuster deal that didn't quite happen.
At the 2025 trade deadline, the Toronto Maple Leafs were highly active, and while they acquired Scott Laughton from Philadelphia and Brandon Carlo from Boston, it wasn't enough to get them to the Eastern Conference Finals.
Now, there's been details of a failed trade between the Maple Leafs and the Flyers, as GM Brad Treliving was reportedly looking to land defenseman Rasmus Ristolainen, either in the same trade that saw them land Laughton or a separate deal.
According to Postmedia's Bruce Garrioch, a league source revealed to him that the Maple Leafs offered the moon for Ristolainen but simply couldn't get it done, as they instead pivoted to Carlo with the Bruins.
"League executives also suggested the Senators could try to see if they can find a fit with the Philadelphia Flyers for right-shot blueliner Rasmus Ristolainen, who has two years left at $5.1 million per season. But it should be noted that the Toronto Maple Leafs tried desperately to get Ristolainen at the trade deadline in March, and were rebuffed.
"'The Leafs offered the moon and couldn't get him out of there,'" a league source said."
If the Leafs were offering similar to what they gave up to get Carlo, that would have meant Philly would have made out with two first-round draft picks, Nikita Grebenkin and Fraser Minten, but it appears as though that wasn't enough for them.
It's unclear whether or not Ristolainen would have been the difference-maker for this Maple Leafs team down the stretch, as it certainly would have given them a different look on their blue line, but it ultimately didn't happen.
