The upsets keep coming at 2025 French Open

It's upset galore in the early goings of the 2025 French Open.

On Sunday, World No. 21 Tomas Machac, No. 28 Brandon Nakashima and No. 32 Alex Michelsen fell to a trio of unseeded players: Quentin Halys, Mariano Navone and Juan Manuel Cerundolo, respectively. On the women's side, No. 26 Marta Kostyuk, No. 27 Leylah Fernandez and No. 29 Linda Noskova suffered a similar fate.

The upsets were more pronounced on Monday's Day 2, with No. 9 Emma Navarro falling to unseeded Spaniard Jessica Bouzas Maneiro in straight sets, 6-0, 6-1, and Naomi Osaka falling to No. 10 Paula Badosa in three sets. Although Osaka's loss isn't technically an upset, the four-time major winner has been trying to regain relevancy since returning from her two-year maternity hiatus in 2024.

Fritz, Cerundolo sent packing

Also on Monday, another top-ranked American was ousted early as World No. 4 Taylor Fritz fell to the unseeded Daniel Altmaier in four sets. The loss marked yet another disappointing outcome for Fritz, who lost in the third round at the Australian Open and suffered early exits at ATP1000 events in Rome and Madrid.

Fritz entered the new season to a lot of hype after his best year as a pro in 2024, which saw him reach the finals of the ATP Finals and the U.S. Open. As such, the American was primed to take a big step in 2025 and inch closer to an elusive major.

Monday's Day 2 saw another notable upset that could create an easier path to the second week for No. 3 Alexander Zverev and No. 6 Novak Djokovic. No. 18 Francisco Cerundolo suffered a stunning straight-sets loss to unseeded Canadian Gabriel Diallo after being broken four times in the second set. In the lead-up to the French Open, the Argentine was earmarked as one of the biggest dark horses after his impressive performances in the clay-court swing at Rome and Madrid.

Cerundolo was fresh off a convincing win over Zverev in Madrid, which led the latter to admit he "hates playing" the Argentine. Furthermore, he defeated Djokovic in the fourth round at Roland-Garros last year. With Cerundolo out of the way, Zverev and Djokovic no longer have to contend with the tricky opponent down the road.

So, who is on upset alert during Tuesday's Day 3? World No. 30 Hubert Hurkacz will have his hands full against teenage prodigy Joao Fonseca, who makes his French Open debut. Also, 2023 French Open finalist Karolina Muchova, dealing with a persistent wrist injury, could be in trouble against American Alycia Parks.
