Last week, beat reporters suggested that Chicago Bears quarterback Caleb Williams had an up-and-down practice session during the first practice that was open to the media for OTAs. Williams was erratic and inconsistent throwing the ball.
On Tuesday, Albert Breer of Sports Illustrated provided an update (through the eyes of Bears’ sources) on how Williams has been practicing throughout OTAs, saying he’s been growing more comfortable in new head coach Ben Johnson’s offense.
“On the field, Williams has been good for at least one ‘did he really do that?’ throw every day,” Breer wrote.
During the second voluntary practice open to the media on Wednesday, Williams had a terrible day throwing, especially over the middle of the field.
“One main takeaway from today’s Bears practice is that Caleb Williams had a tough time throwing in the middle of the field when Tremaine Edmunds was covering the intended target,” posted Nicholas Moreano on X. “Williams tried targeting Devin Duvernay, but Edmunds got an INT.
“Jaquan Brisker got an INT on Williams after he tried connecting with Rome Odunze in the middle of the field. Edmunds was, again, in coverage.”

OTAs are the time for the Bears and Williams to work out kinks in the offense. Still, the issue that Williams had on Wednesday is a concerning one.
Quarterbacks have to feel comfortable throwing over the middle in the NFL. Williams avoided throwing over the middle of the field in his rookie season. And the issue plagued Justin Fields during his three seasons in Chicago.
