Emphatic Elena Rybakina seals statement win over 17-year-old American Iva Jovic at Roland Garros
Sipa Press

Elena Rybakina is through to the third round of the French Open, and a showdown awaits now against Jelena Ostapenko after easing past rising American, Iva Jovic at Roland Garros.

Rybakina won Internationaux de Strasbourg last week and now seals a sixth straight win, it is a fifth consecutive Roland Garros third round and a 25th win of 2025.

Her power and depth were on full display against the 17-year-old who is continually making a name for herself as a name to watch for the future. But while that might be the case, Rybakina is stating that she is here in the present and ready to return to her best.

After a poor year at times, Rybakina is a shining example in what is a pretty open WTA draw with top names falling left right and center. Likely Iga Swiatek could await in a blockbuster tie if she beats Ostapenko, a fate that the Pole will also want given her poor record against the Latvian.

But Rybakina also had to weather a late match and said that she wasn't adept to the conditions throughout as the heat decreased and the wind took hold. She adapted well though and eased through 6-3, 6-3 against Jovic who no doubt we will hear more from but not in Paris.

“It was a long day. Waited a long time to play the match. Overall I’m happy with the win. It wasn’t easy. A bit cold, a bit of wind. She played well. I’m happy with the permanence. Of course it can always be better, but I’m happy to get through another round. Thank you so much everyone who came to support us," said Rybakina post match.

"For now I’m focusing match by match. I definitely want to improve the result. I want to go further in the draw, but we’ll see how it goes this year. I’ll try to do my best. Let’s see how it’s gonna go.”
