Mighty Mirra Andreeva moves past Ashlyn Krueger as Roland Garros revenge mission succeeds
IPA

18-year-old Mirra Andreeva took a slow start against at the French Open but she succeeded in moving past Ashlyn Krueger into the third round at Roland Garros.

The sixth seed came from 3-1 down in the first set to defeat Ashlyn Krueger 6-3, 6-4 advancing to the third round for the third time in as many years. Her section also remains fairly open so she will likely reach the Quarter-Finals at least again this year.

It was also a revenge mission as Krueger had taken her down on a Grand Slam stage before. She upset her last year at the US Open in the second round. Having overturned a 3-0 deficit against Bucsa in her last round, she also had to find her way back.

Krueger went into a 2-0 and 3-2 lead in the opening set but Andreeva won every game from 3-3 to seal the set 6-3 including two emphatic breaks as she managed to hit the accelerator at the right time. She saved break points as she claimed the set 6-3 from 15-40 down against the American who could've fought back in the set had she succeeded.

It was again a fraught start for Andreeva in the second as she was broken back immediately twice after gaining a foothold. But while Krueger held a narrow 3-2 and 4-3 lead, she broke for 5-4.

This saw her gain the hammer blow as she claimed the win from there. She now faces Yulia Putintseva or qualifier Joanna Garland as she bids to make the second week again. Good friend Daria Kasatkina or Paula Badosa could be a latter stage opponent albeit neither have been in supreme form as of late so could both fall before they face Andreeva potentially.

But Andreeva has completed her mission for now and eases through to the next round in the end.
