Novak Djokovic silences Paris crowd and Corentin Moutet with gritty straight-sets win at Roland Garros
Sipa Press

Novak Djokovic came out victorious in his match against Corentin Moutet and advanced confidently to the third round of Roland Garros. The 24-time Grand Slam champion had no major difficulties against the talented Frenchman, defeating him 6-3, 6-2, 7-6(1) after nearly three hours of play.

The Serbian star remains in top form, earning his sixth consecutive win on clay – following his title run at the Geneva Open. Djokovic will next face the winner between Denis Shapovalov (27th seed) and Filip Misolic in the third round.

First Set

The first set started perfectly for Nole, who grabbed an early break to take the lead. However, Moutet responded with a break of his own, showing he was ready to fight for the win. Djokovic dominated with his first serve – winning 79% of first-serve points – but struggled during longer rallies due to Moutet’s aggressive returns.

At 3-3, Djokovic capitalised on Moutet’s unforced errors and his weak serving to secure the decisive break. Holding his serve comfortably, the former world No. 1 sealed the set 6-3 in 43 minutes.

Second Set

The second set began tensely, with Moutet saving four break points in the opening game. But it was only a matter of time before Djokovic found the breakthrough. He broke in the third game and held to lead 3-1. Moutet endured his worst serving moments of the match, barely landing first serves and facing several break points.

From the return, the Frenchman couldn’t hurt Djokovic, who dominated the set without facing a single break point. Nole broke again in the seventh game and wrapped it up 6-2. He raised his level, hitting 20 winners (up from 10 in the first set) with only one additional unforced error (10 total).

Third Set

Moutet wasn’t done yet and fought hard in the third. After a close start with both holding serve, Djokovic experienced physical discomfort and called for a medical timeout at 2-3, citing a left foot issue. Once play resumed, Moutet broke and moved ahead 4-2.

But the world No. 73 couldn’t hold the momentum. Djokovic broke back quickly to level the set at 4-4. No further breaks occurred, sending the match into a tiebreak. Djokovic showed his trademark composure and experience in clutch moments, closing out the match in straight sets: 6-3, 6-2, 7-6(1).
