Oilers’ Connor McDavid becomes second-fastest player to 100 postseason assists

McDavid hit the milestone in the opening minutes of Game 5 of the Western Conference Final against the Dallas Stars on Thursday. With the Oilers on an early power play, McDavid corralled a bank pass from the back boards courtesy of Leon Draisaitl, and then immediately set up a wide open Corey Perry for the goal, giving the Oilers a 1-0 lead.

At the time of publishing, the Oilers now hold a 3-0 lead in the game. With a win, the Oilers will have the opportunity to advance to the Stanley Cup Final for the second consecutive year, with a rematch with the Florida Panthers lined up.

With the assist, McDavid reaches 100 playoff assists in his NHL career, becoming the second-fastest player to do so. McDavid achieved the feat in his 90th game.

However, McDavid doesn’t even become the fastest player to hit the mark in Oilers franchise history, because the only other player to do so is Wayne Gretzky when he was with the team. Gretzky achieved the feat in his 70th game.

McDavid currently sits in fifth in Oilers franchise history in postseason assists, although he is still 71 behind Gretzky for most all-time. McDavid is, however, two assists away from tying Glenn Anderson for fourth, and 10 away from tying Jari Kurri for third. McDavid is also incredibly already in 26th in all-time postseason assists, and is two behind Joe Thornton for 25th.

It’s been another fantastic playoff performance for McDavid, as he’s managed 5 goals and 19 assists for 24 points in 15 games heading into Game 5. However, that pace falls just short of his run in 2024, where he had 8 goals and 34 assists for 42 points in 25 games.
