When the Seattle Seahawks drafted quarterback Jalen Milroe in the third round, fans immediately questioned how quickly the Alabama product would see the field. While the 22-year-old is likely to start the season serving as a backup to Sam Darnold, he is studying another NFC West quarterback in hopes of fast-tracking his development.
While speaking to Eric Williams of Fox Sports, Milroe revealed that he has been working with offensive coordinator Klint Kubiak to analyze San Francisco 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy and acclimate himself to the similarities between the systems.
"What’s unique about Brock is he played in the same system that I'm in right now. So, it’s been great to see the tape and see some of our reads and play calls and watching him play."
Kubiak knows Purdy well, having served as San Francisco's passing game coordinator in 2023 amidst the newly minted franchise quarterback’s MVP finalist season. One key trait Milroe is keying in on is how Purdy utilizes his feet, especially in the pocket.
"He understands his feet are tied into the read and pocket integrity," Milroe said of Purdy. "When he plays on time, that's when he's at his best and he's been most efficient. That's what I've been able to capture as I've studied his game."
Although Milroe does not expect to be a starter at the beginning of the season, he will not have to wait long to see Purdy in person, as the Seahawks host the 49ers in the season opener on September 7 at Lumen Field.
If Milroe wants imitate a fellow quarterback's ascension, Purdy is the right person to study. Entering mid-game in Week 13 against the Miami Dolphins during his rookie season, Purdy has quickly become one of the league's top stars. With Purdy having already been to a Super Bowl, nearly won an MVP and signed a franchise-record contract extension, Milroe and the Seahawks would do anything to mimic Purdy's instant success.
