Four under-the-radar players who could be moved at MLB trade deadline

The addition of the wild card has transformed MLB’s trade deadline. The expanded playoff field has created a surplus of buyers and a shortage of sellers.

High-profile players such as Miami Marlins right-hander Sandy Alcantara, Milwaukee Brewers right-hander Freddy Peralta, Baltimore Orioles outfielder Cedric Mullins, St. Louis Cardinals third baseman Nolan Arenado and Chicago White Sox outfielder Luis Robert Jr. are expected to dominate the headlines in the rumor mill.

However, several under-the-radar options could dramatically move the needle for the league’s top contenders. Here are four of them who could be available at the July 31 trade deadline:

Ryan Weathers, SP, Miami Marlins

Best destination: Chicago Cubs

Weathers is the rare bright spot on Miami's staff. Former Cy Young winner Alcantara has struggled mightily in his first season back from the injured list. Cal Quantrill, the team’s marquee offseason acquisition, has a 6.09 ERA. Max Meyer has also battled inconsistency.

In many ways, Weathers has emerged as Miami’s de facto ace. His improved fastball velocity has allowed the former top prospect to break out in a major way. The Marlins could retain the 25-year-old as a foundational piece of their rebuild, but president of baseball operations Peter Bendix has a track record of flipping established talent for prospect capital.

Most contending clubs require rotation help, but few viable starters appear to be available.

This is a prime opportunity for Bendix to sell high, potentially sending Weathers to the Cubs, Red Sox, Mets, or Orioles.

Pete Fairbanks, RP, Tampa Bay Rays

Best destination: Philadelphia Phillies

The Phillies boast one of the most complete rosters in baseball. Their starting rotation is deep and talented. Their lineup is full of veteran heavyweights. And their recent postseason pedigree speaks for itself.

However, the bullpen is a major area of concern. The club lacked a clear closer entering the season. Since then, Jordan Romano has flashed dominance but has also performed poorly enough to be on the verge of a minor league demotion.

To make matters worse, high-leverage reliever Jose Alvarado is serving an 80-game suspension because of a performance-enhancing substance violation. If the Phillies are serious about winning their first World Series since 2008, the bullpen must be addressed.

Enter Fairbanks. The longtime Rays reliever has a career 3.17 ERA and 73 saves over seven seasons. If Romano finds his form, Fairbanks could be an elite setup option. If not, he’s more than capable of taking over the closer role and providing the depth and insurance the Phillies desperately need.

Anthony Bender, RP, Miami Marlins

Best destination: Texas Rangers

The Rangers have had a strange start to the 2025 season. Their once-elite offense ranks among the league’s bottom three. While the starting rotation has overperformed expectations, the bullpen —anchored by Robert Garcia, Luke Jackson and Shawn Armstrong — is a rollercoaster of inconsistency.

For Texas to rebound from its sluggish start, it must win more close games. Bender’s career ERA is 3.11 and he has a stellar 1.59 mark this season. He would immediately become the most reliable option in the Rangers’ high-leverage situations.

Reid Detmers, SP, Los Angeles Angels

Best destination: New York Mets

Detmers’ career arc has been anything but linear. The 10th overall pick in the 2020 MLB Draft flashed early brilliance, becoming the youngest pitcher (22) to record a no-hitter in Angels history. But the left-hander's career ERA is 5.01.

The New York Mets have quietly built one of MLB’s best pitching development systems. No organization is better equipped to help Detmers tap back into his potential. They’ve already helped rejuvenate the careers of right-hander Luis Severino, left-hander Sean Manaea, right-hander Griffin Canning and right-hander Clay Holmes.

Padres Officially Release Veteran After Disappointing Season

Padres Officially Release Veteran After Disappointing Season

The San Diego Padres announced Wednesday that they released veteran catcher Martin Maldonado, who was designated for assigment last week. The writing was on the wall when the Padres acquired Freddy Fermin from the Kansas City Royals at last Thursday's trade deadline, upending their catching tandem. Fermin, 30, immediately got the opportunity to take the lion's share of innings behind the plate that he was never going to get in Kansas City. The Padres designated Maldonado for assignment in a corresponding roster move, ending the 38-year-old's tenure in San Diego. Maldonado hit .204 with four home runs and 12 RBIs in 64 games, splitting time with Elias Diaz. The 2019 American League Gold Glove Award winner, Maldonado has played 1,230 games for seven different organizations since his 2011 debut. Maldonado is a career .203/.277/.343 hitter with the Milwaukee Brewers (2011-16), Angels (2017-18), Houston Astros (2018-23), Royals (2019), Chicago Cubs (2019), Chicago White Sox (2024) and Padres (2025). More to come on this story from Padres on SI.

Jalen Milroe surges past former NFL starter on first Seattle Seahawks depth chart

Despite being viewed as a potential first-round pick in the 2025 NFL Draft, former Alabama quarterback Jalen Milroe ended up sliding into the third round. The 22-year-old — who was the starter for Alabama for two seasons — was selected with the No. 92 pick by the Seattle Seahawks. Although every player's dream is to go in the first round, Milroe likely couldn't have gone to a better situation. There is virtually no pressure on him as the Seahawks signed former Minnesota Vikings quarterback Sam Darnold to a three-year, $100.5 million contract this offseason, and they also have Drew Lock, who has started 28 career games on the roster as well. However, based on ESPN's initial depth chart, Milroe may be climbing the depth chart sooner than most expected. Seattle Seahawks depth chart As reported by ESPN, the Seahawks depth chart goes as follows: QB1: Sam Darnold QB2 Jalen Milroe QB3 Drew Lock If this truly ends up being the case, Milroe has taken major strides following his final season at Alabama. During his last year in Tuscaloosa, Milroe was criticized heavily for forcing passes into windows that weren't there after being late on reads. In his final season at Alabama, Milroe threw a career-high 11 interceptions to just 16 touchdowns, an increase of five more interceptions than he threw in 2023. Although training camp is still ongoing and the preseason games have yet to be played, clearly, Milroe is finding some success in the Pacific Northwest.

Jaydon Blue injury update: Major news emerges on Cowboys RB after Thursday practice exit

According to Nick Harris of The Fort Worth Star-Telegram, Dallas Cowboys running back Jaydon Blue suffered a bone bruise in his heel on Thursday. Blue was stepped on during practice, initially looking at an ankle sprain. Thankfully, the MRI came back with some positive news. “Cowboys RB Jaydon Blue’s MRI revealed a bone bruise in his heel after it was stepped on in today’s practice, according to a @startelegram source,” Harris said via X. “No ankle sprain. Good news for the young back who has emerged as an offensive playmaker in camp.” Blue previously told Harris that an ankle injury was what he suffered. Questions about the running back’s availability for Saturday’s preseason game against the Los Angeles Rams are now present. Something to watch as kickoff is scheduled for 6 p.m. CT from SoFi Stadium. Dallas took Blue in the fifth round of the 2025 NFL Draft, hoping to address its running back situation. Blue played his college ball inside the Lone Star State, suiting up for the Texas Longhorns. Plenty of guys at the position have come out of Austin and found quick success. Blue is hoping to be the next one. For now, there is an injury for him to deal with. No exact timeline has been provided per a report or by a team official. Hopefully, Blue is able to get things cleared up quickly and get his first taste of the NFL before Sept. 4’s season opener against the Philadelphia Eagles. More on Jaydon Blue, Cowboys running back situation Running back was a position the Cowboys needed to desperately figure out this offseason. Rico Dowdle, the team’s leading rusher, was no longer on the roster. Behind Dowdle, Dallas did not have much else. A nice mix of veteran presence and youngsters was needed. Javonte Williams and Miles Sanders provide the former, while Blue was a part of the draft class alongside Phil Mafah. A combination of those four figures to be on the opening night roster. Exactly how head coach Brian Schottenheimer splits up the carries is not yet known. Blue’s injury certainly does not help the situation. Cowboys players, in general, have been going down throughout training camp thus far. Making sure everyone is healthy will be critical heading into the season. Especially an explosive back like Blue, someone who can change the outcome of any game in just the snap of your fingers.

Steelers' DK Metcalf discusses connection with Aaron Rodgers after concerning report

Earlier this week, an alarming report suggested that Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Aaron Rodgers lacks chemistry with key wide receivers DK Metcalf and 2024 third-round draft pick Roman Wilson. During a Wednesday appearance on CBS Sports HQ, Metcalf insisted his connection with Rodgers is fine heading into Pittsburgh's preseason opener against the Jacksonville Jaguars on Saturday. "He sees how much I love the game," Metcalf said about Rodgers, Sports Illustrated's Brigid Kennedy shared. "I see how much he loves the game and how much football he's been through. Just pouring all of that knowledge into the younger guys and myself." Rodgers could have had stronger working relationships with his teammates had he joined the club earlier in the offseason. He signed a team-friendly contract shortly before the Steelers began their three-day mandatory minicamp in June. That said, Steelers players have "gravitated to" the future Hall of Famer throughout the summer. Rodgers' "connection" with Wilson reportedly "took a step in the right direction" on Tuesday. According to ESPN's Brooke Pryor, Rodgers hit Metcalf for a pair of touchdowns during a Wednesday drill. "I think it's been great," Metcalf added about working with Rodgers. "Him and [offensive coordinator Arthur Smith] are [collaborating] on some great ideas. I look up to him, [not] just in the football aspect, [but] what he's been through in life. For me to learn from his experiences and whatnot, I think he's just a great addition to my life and my career, just having him at this point in my journey." Following the initial report about the alleged struggles of the Pittsburgh offense during training camp, some wondered if head coach Mike Tomlin would play his starters in Jacksonville. That won't be the case, as Tomlin confirmed on Thursday that Rodgers, Metcalf and other first-teamers will be spectators. According to ESPN, Tomlin didn't completely rule out the possibility of Rodgers taking some preseason snaps this month. The Steelers host the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Aug. 16 before finishing the preseason at the Carolina Panthers on Aug. 21.
