Just when you think the New York Knicks are out, they pull you back in.
Lose some that they should win. Win a few that everyone is positive they will lose. Round and round it goes, how it ends no one yet knows. That’s just been the season.
So the fact they dismantled the visiting Indiana Pacers, 111-94, in Game 5 of the Eastern Conference finals should come as no surprise. Or should it? Either way, the Knicks still trail the series, 3-2, with Game 6 set for Saturday back in Indiana.
That means nothing. These are the Knicks. Before the series, I jokingly predicted they’d fall behind by a 3-0 count … then come back to tie it at 3-all … then lose Game 7 at Madison Square Garden.
They can still do that in some form. They could also still win it and advance to the Finals. Again, who really knows with this group?
All that matters, though, is that they survived another day.
“I’m just very proud of what we did,” star guard Jalen Brunson told reporters. “Now, we’ve just got to replicate it in the first quarter of next game and then continue to build on that.”
Added big man Karl-Anthony Towns: “Tonight was a good testament to when we’re locked in playing 48 minutes we can show the world how special we really are.”
He speaks the truth. The Knicks can be special. They can also be less than that. Which team shows up from here on out, well, that’s just anyone’s guess. That’s just the New York Knicks.
Brunson led all scorers with 32. Towns tacked on 24 points and 13 rebounds. New York also really did a defensive number on Pacers guard Tyrese Haliburton, who finished just 2-of-7 shooting (0-of-2 on 3-pointers) for eight points.
