A recent report detailed how veteran Dallas Cowboys wide receiver CeeDee Lamb has been helping George Pickens fit in with the club after Dallas acquired Pickens from the Pittsburgh Steelers earlier this month.
On Thursday, first-year Cowboys head coach Brian Schottenheimer addressed how Lamb has been a positive for Pickens throughout springtime workouts.
"Those two guys' relationship is awesome," Schottenheimer explained, per Eva Geitheim of Sports Illustrated. "They're spending a lot of time together. I think it's great for CeeDee to have someone like George. Not that George is a young player, but someone that GP really looks up to in CeeDee. They obviously have trained some together. That relationship is really cool. I'm enjoying just kind of sitting back and watching it develop."
This past Tuesday, The Athletic's Jon Machota noted that "Dallas believes it has the ideal culture for Pickens to thrive" after the Steelers reportedly got "fed up with" the 2022 second-round draft pick. Pickens was allegedly guilty of a "litany of violations" during his Pittsburgh tenure, such as showing up late for practices and for the Steelers' Christmas Day game against the Kansas City Chiefs this past December.
The Cowboys nevertheless took a risk when they sent the Steelers a 2026 third-round draft pick and a 2027 fifth-rounder for Pickens and a 2027 sixth-round choice. Pickens is in the final year of his rookie contract, and it seems both sides are willing to see how things go this coming season before they consider engaging in discussions regarding a new deal.
Also on Thursday, Schottenheimer discussed how Pickens has been "doing an incredible job picking up the system" over the past few weeks. Specifically, Schottenheimer broke down how Pickens reeled in a pass thrown by backup quarterback Joe Milton III during a midweek practice session.
"CeeDee was on the other side," Schottenheimer said about the play, according to Julia Stumbaugh of Bleacher Report. "And when CeeDee broke out, and he looked back to see where the ball went, and he saw George in the end zone, he kind of dragged his toes up, CeeDee was like, 'Yes!' So I think his excitement for knowing that we've added some pieces, which will add to the competition, was cool to see a guy like CeeDee be excited."
Current New York Giants quarterback Russell Wilson shared a locker room with Pickens last season and recently insisted the mercurial talent is "misunderstood" and "wants to be great." If Schottenheimer, Lamb and Dallas quarterback Dak Prescott can unlock such greatness over the next handful of months, Pickens could be a steal for the 2025 Cowboys.
