No mercy: Elena Rybakina blasts past Jelena Ostapenko, sets blockbuster clash against Iga Swiatek
Sipa Press

Elena Rybakina swept aside Jelena Ostapenko in the third round of Roland Garros with a 6-2, 6-3 victory, setting up a Round of 16 clash with Iga Swiatek. The Kazakhstani defeated the former French Open champion for the fourth consecutive time, extending their head-to-head to 4-2 in a notable performance from her side.

The Kazakhstani struggled with her first serve – landing less than 50% throughout the match – but capitalized on her opponent's constant unforced errors to secure an important win that sends her to the 4th round of Roland Garros.

First Set

The match was intense from the start, with a thrilling first game where Rybakina managed an opening break after six break point opportunities. The Kazakhstani quickly went up 2-0 on her serve, setting the tone for the match, with Ostapenko struggling on her serve while Rybakina confidently held her own.

The Latvian barely landed 55% of her first serves and won 67% of those points. However, she struggled with her second serve, winning only 29%. On the other hand, Rybakina hardly played with first serves (only 29%), which didn't pose a problem for her, as she was almost equally ruthless on both first and second serves, conceding only 5 points on her serve throughout the set.

After Ostapenko reached 3-2 – saving another break point against her – Rybakina took the next three games consecutively, taking advantage of Ostapenko's constant unforced errors. The fact that Rybakina was playing with second serves for much of the set tempted Ostapenko to quickly go for winners, but she wasn't precise on this occasion, constantly gifting points to her opponent. Rybakina closed the set 6-2 after 38 minutes.

Second Set

The match was marked by the inconsistencies of the 2017 Roland Garros champion, who avoided long rallies. Rybakina, primarily aiming to play with her backhand, again secured an early break in the second set and went up 2-0 on her serve without problems.

All seemed lost for Ostapenko when Rybakina got a second break and took a 4-1 lead with her serve to follow. After being 40-30 up, Ostapenko showed her usual dominance with powerful shots that shortened points, and this time the risks paid off, as she broke back to reduce the deficit.

That break did little good for the 27-year-old, as she then squandered the momentum and conceded her serve to her opponent for the second consecutive time. This time without hesitation, Rybakina sealed the victory on her serve with a 6-2, 6-2 score. The 2022 Wimbledon champion had problems with her first serve that could cost her dearly in the future, but Ostapenko's lack of precision was key for the Kazakhstani to close out the win. In the fourth round, she faces four-time Roland Garros champion Iga Swiatek, with whom she has a 4-4 head-to-head record so far.
