Red Sox have glimmer of hope for rest of season after series win

Frustrated Red Sox fans now have a glimmer of hope thanks to Boston's weekend series win over the Atlanta Braves. With Sunday's 3-1 victory, the Red Sox claimed the series after taking out two of three from Atlanta.

Even though Boston still sits three games below .500 at 29-32 and has only won four out of their last 10 games, the Red Sox finally enjoyed some luck going their way.

With only eight total runs scored throughout the weekend, Boston's pitching stepped up to head into a new week on a positive note.

Garrett Crochet allowed just one run in exactly seven innings while giving up only five hits and striking out 12 batters on Sunday.

Crochet is now 5-4 on the season, continuing to be a stabilizing force on the mound for Boston.

Reliever Greg Weissert and closer Aroldis Chapman pitched one scoreless inning each to shut down any chance of a comeback. Champan now has nine saves and a 1.88 ERA as he adds to his eventual case for the Baseball Hall of Fame.

In the Red Sox's Friday win, five different relievers pitched a shutout after starter Lucas Giolito gave up one run in just over four innings of work.

Offensively, shortstop Trevor Story was the clear MVP of the series.

His base-clearing double in the top of the first inning on Sunday was all the Red Sox needed. Story rocked a ball to the deepest part of Atlanta's Truist Park.

Back on Friday, Story crushed a two-run home run. And after an up-and-down season, Story is heating up as May turned to June. He is now hitting. 222 with seven long balls on the season.

Rafael Devers went 2-for-4 with two RBI and Abraham Toro-Hernandez drove in a run of his own off one of his three hits in the game 1 win.

And while the Braves did shut out Boston 5-0 on Saturday, the Red Sox accomplished their goal for the weekend nonetheless.

One series is far from enough to signal a change in Boston's season, but it may earn manager Alex Cora more time to turn things around and avoid another lost year.

The Red Sox — now 16-14 at home — will head back to the friendly confines of Fenway Park to start the new week with a three-game series against the Los Angeles Angels.
