Andrew McCutchen ties Roberto Clemente on Pirates' all-time home run list

The Pittsburgh Pirates have a long, storied history. Andrew McCutchen may not have the championship success of his peers, but there's little question that he ranks among the franchise's all-time legends.

Cutch secured that thinking on Sunday, moving into a tie with Roberto Clemente on the club's all-time home run leaderboard.

With the Pirates in San Diego to play the Padres, McCutchen hit a two-run home run in the fifth inning on Sunday. The shot would put Pittsburgh ahead, though they'd lose the game, 6-4, and would be the 240th home run of his Pirates' career.

Longtime Pirates legend Willie Stargell stands atop the franchise home run list with 475. Ralph Kiner is second at 301. Barring a surprising resurgence that prolongs his career, it's unlikely the 38-year-old McCutchen reaches them.

McCutchen was one of the best center fielders in the National League for the first nine seasons of his career. Over that stretch, he hit a combined .291/.379/.487 (136 OPS+) with 203 home runs while going to five All-Star games, winning four Silver Slugger Awards, and an MVP.

The veteran bounced around the majors over the next five seasons, playing for four different teams, while hitting another 84 home runs. He then returned to Pittsburgh for the 2023 season.

Serving mostly as a designated hitter in the later years of his career, McCutchen has hit just .247/.355/.402 (109 OPS+) with 36 home runs since re-joining the Pirates.

Despite everything, McCutchen has long remained a fan favorite in Pittsburgh. Tying, and soon passing, Clemente on the franchise's all-time home run list helps secure how those outside the Steel City will remember him.
