Most tradable asset for every National League team

Buy or sell? That's the question many teams will face as the July 31 Major League Baseball trade deadline approaches.

Ahead of the big day, Yardbarker MLB writers identify each National League team's most tradable asset. (Records and statistics are through Sunday.)

NL East

ATLANTA BRAVES (27-31) | RHP Raisel Iglesias | 2025 is an uncharacteristically poor season so far for the Braves, whose shutdown closer has struggled (5.64 ERA). Teams could still inquire about the 35-year-old, who has 232 saves and a 2.96 career ERA.

MIAMI MARLINS (23-34) | RHP Sandy Alcantara | Trade chatter has followed Alcantara since his return from Tommy John surgery in spring training, so this shouldn't come as a surprise. Despite an 8.47 ERA, the 2022 NL Cy Young Award is expected to be a hot commodity on the trade market — pitching does win championships, after all.

NEW YORK METS (37-22) | LHP David Peterson | Amid a career year, Peterson could still be on his way out at the deadline when injured starters Frankie Montas, Sean Manaea and Paul Blackburn return. Any contending team in need of pitching should check in on Peterson, who has a 2.69 ERA and 1.26 WHIP in 63.2 innings.

PHILADELPHIA PHILLIES (36-23) | Infielder Aidan Miller | The Phillies’ lack of tradable assets has been exposed over the past few seasons at the trade deadline and in the offseason. But for the team to return to the World Series for the first time since 2022, it must have a near-perfect deadline, which might include parting with Miller and another one of the top prospects in Double-A.

WASHINGTON NATIONALS (28-31) | RHP Kyle Finnegan | The 2024 All-Star is having another great season (2.61 ERA and 16 saves). However, the 33-year-old signed a one-year deal in the offseason, so teams needing bullpen help for the stretch run will surely be calling the Nationals. — Lauren Amour

NL West

ARIZONA DIAMONDBACKS (28-31) | RHP Zac Gallen | The 29-year-old has already been a part of two blockbuster trades, including the deal for Jazz Chisholm Jr. that brought him from Miami. With Gallen scheduled to be a free agent at the end of the season, there’s no guarantee he will be back in Arizona.

COLORADO ROCKIES (9-50) | RHP German Marquez | One of the centerpieces of the Rockies during their postseason appearances in 2017 and 2018, the 30-year-old Marquez has struggled with health and performance since making the All-Star Game in 2021. A free agent after this season, Marquez has shown promising signs in three of his past four starts, but is it enough for other teams to look past his 7.13 ERA this season?

LOS ANGELES DODGERS (36-23) | OF Zyhir Hope | If the Dodgers make deals to replace some of their injured pitchers, they must trade top prospects, perhaps including Hope, who's the third-best prospect in the organization, per MLB.com. Acquired from the Chicago Cubs in the Michael Busch trade, Hope has a .896 OPS in 183 at-bats at High-A.

SAN DIEGO PADRES (33-24) | RHP Dylan Cease | With Cease and RHP Michael King possibly becoming free agents after this season (if King doesn’t cash in on his part of the mutual option), the Padres may have to decide which one of the two starters to keep. There were plenty of trade rumors surrounding Cease in the offseason, but would San Diego break up the rotation with a postseason berth as a possibility?

SAN FRANCISCO GIANTS (33-26) | LHP Joe Whitman | If San Francisco stays in the postseason hunt and becomes a buyer at the deadline, look for it to deal prospects to boost October chances. That could include Whitman, who is the seventh-best prospect in the Giants organization, per MLB.com, and has a 3.53 ERA in nine Double-A starts. — Kevin Henry

NL Central

CHICAGO CUBS (37-22) | 3B Justin Turner | In his 17th year in the majors, Turner is overshadowed by a young infield core. He is slashing just .210/.302/.272, but the 17-year veteran with playoff experience is what many teams look for at the trade deadline.

CINCINNATI REDS (29-31) | RHP Nick Martinez | As the Reds look to make space in their overcrowded starting rotation, Martinez (3-6, 3.89 ERA) stands out as a dynamic player who could depart Cincinnati by the deadline. Though used as a starter with the Reds, he has bullpen experience, too.

MILWAUKEE BREWERS (32-28) | RHP Tobias Myers | On a one-year, $781,000 contract, Myers, 26, has shown big league potential, most notably in his Game 3 start in the NL wild-card game last season. Arbitration eligible in 2027 and a free agent in 2031, Myers is a young pitcher who may not fit in Milwaukee but would in many rotations. His price is right.

PITTSBURGH PIRATES (22-38) | Utility man Isiah Kiner-Falefa | The 30-year-old utility man is playing well, but Pittsburgh’s struggles as a team have overshadowed his season. In 48 games, Kiner-Falefa is slashing .303/.350/.388, making him a reliable and affordable player ($6.283M in 2025) who could be a solid trade chip.

ST. LOUIS CARDINALS (33-26) | RHP Erick Fedde | Despite expectations they would sell heading into the season, the Cardinals are in playoff contention and may not hold a major sale at all. Fedde, now in his final year of his two-year, $15M contract, has value and a 3.82 ERA. — Taylor Bretl
