The United States Men's National Team fell 2-1 to Türkiye in East Hartford, Connecticut, on Saturday. It's the USMNT's third straight defeat of 2025, following losses to Panama and Canada in the Nations League finals in March.
If that sounds like bad news for the USMNT, it is; the team would rather not be scrabbling for results on home soil just one year out from hosting the World Cup. But this performance against Türkiye was full of moments that prove the USMNT's future remains bright. With the likes of Christian Pulisic, Weston McKennie, Tim Weah, Yunus Musah and Antonee Robinson all unavailable, the USMNT B-team put in a spirited performance that looked far more coherent than what the A-team managed a few short months ago.
Games like this one deserve context. While the USMNT obviously wants to win every match it enters, its under-resourced B-team probably should be playing out a closely-run loss against a strong European opponent like Türkiye. Anything better than that would be exceptional; anything worse than that would be inadequate. That means this particular loss isn't a catastrophe for the USMNT: it's simply an extension of the team's status quo. (Whether or not that is a catastrophe in and of itself, however, remains an open question.)
Who stood out during this performance? Who fell short? And who might be working their way into Pochettino's A-team as the World Cup looms? Here are our thoughts on the USMNT's winners and losers against Türkiye:
Winner: Jack McGlynn
McGlynn is a polarizing figure within the USMNT fandom. To his supporters, McGlynn is one of the team's few true line-breaking passers. To his detractors, though, McGlynn is something of a defensive liability: the kind of player who has neither the speed nor the positional awareness to track back and cover for his teammates. If he's not scoring bangers, his detractors reason, he's not doing anything at all.
Well. On Saturday, McGlynn scored one of those trademark jaw-dropping left-footed goals, and he managed to do it just 59 seconds after kickoff. His beautiful curled shot knocked the air clean out of Türkiye's lungs and tilted the opening twenty minutes firmly in the USMNT's favor. McGlynn may never be the all-around midfielder USMNT fans need him to be, but performances like this one show just how world-class he is as a goalscorer.
Loser: Johnny Cardoso
If you asked a first-time soccer viewer which member of this USMNT squad made it to a European final this season, they would've named everyone before settling on Cardoso. What a shame that is.
Cardoso is one of American soccer's finest exports: he had a brilliant season for Real Betis in Spain and is in talks to play alongside Julian Alvarez and Antoine Griezmann at Atletico Madrid. But Cardoso has never, not once, found his footing with the USMNT, and today was no exception. His error in the 24th minute wound up deciding the game in Türkiye's favor.
Winner: Max Arfsten
Arfsten, one of the sleeper hits of the Pochettino era, really grew into this Türkiye game. He started things off in a far more defensive role, man-marking the likes of Real Madrid's Arda Güler, but slowly blossomed into one of the team's strongest attacking threats. His lung-busting runs up the flank created chaos for Türkiye in the second half.
Loser: Nathan Harriel
Harriel, one of several Philadelphia Union academy players in this USMNT lineup, didn't cover himself in glory against Türkiye, but his lack of impact wasn't exactly his fault. The 24-year-old just looked like he needed a few more reps at a high level in order to find his footing. This was his first-ever USMNT cap, and it looked like it.
Winner: Chris Richards
The USMNT has been in desperate need of a defensive leader since...about 2014, when Carlos Bocanegra and Steve Cherundolo finally hung up their boots. While Charlotte's Tim Ream and Nashville's Walker Zimmerman have deputized well in recent seasons, Crystal Palace stalwart Chris Richards blew them both out of the water against Türkiye. He's been full of confidence since winning the FA Cup—if he can keep evolving and improving, he'll be a nailed-on starter for the 2026 World Cup.
The USMNT will return to action on Tuesday, June 10, against Switzerland in Nashville, Tennessee.

In 2024, Green Bay Packers backup quarterback Malik Willis was suddenly given the keys to the offense under center after Jordan Love suffered an injury in Week 1’s loss to the Philadelphia Eagles in Brazil. Despite limited time with the Packers in the offseason, Willis managed to be a steady presence on the field, with Green Bay tailoring the offense for him. With Love reportedly undergoing a procedure on his left thumb, Willis filled in as the Packers’ QB1 during Thursday’s joint practice with the Indianapolis Colts. Willis appeared to make a good account of himself on the field, with Packers running back Josh Jacobs taking notice of the quarterback’s performance. “We know what Malik is and what we have in Malik,” Jacobs said, per Wes Hodkiewicz of the Packers’ website. Jacobs also shared his confidence in Willis’ NFL outlook. “He made a few throws today that was kinda like, ‘Wow.’ Just him being more comfortable and him being the leader, I think he’s naturally a guy that he puts in the work, so I think he’s going to succeed.” Will Jordan Love be ready for the Green Bay Packers’ 2025 NFL season opener? The Packers are less than a month away from kicking off their 2025 campaign, with a date with the Detroit Lions at Lambeau Field scheduled for September 7. Green Bay, however, doesn’t seem all that worried about Love’s availability for that contest. “We’ll get him back in plenty of time,” Packers general manager Brian Gutekunst said (h/t Rob Demovsky of ESPN). “I don’t foresee this affecting him long term at all.” As for the upcoming preseason clash with the Colts and the one after that versus the Seattle Seahawks, Love can be expected to sit out both contests, with Willis possibly getting some snaps.
As the 2025-26 NBA season nears, one team that continues to be the subject of trade rumors is the Sacramento Kings. Of course, the Kings elected to keep their core of Domantas Sabonis, DeMar DeRozan and Zach LaVien together this offseason despite many around the league expecting them to begin a rebuild. Sacramento also made some notable additions to their roster this summer as they selected Nique Clifford and Maxime Raynaud in the 2025 draft and added Dennis Schroder in free agency. While the Kings have upgraded their roster this offseason, some of their players continue to be in trade rumors, primarily for Golden State Warriors forward Jonathan Kuminga who Sacramento is reportedly targeting. For the Kings, multiple players have come up in trad rumors this summer but none more than Malik Monk who is coming off the best season of his NBA career. Despite this, the Kings have elected to keep Monk thus far but that could change as they continue to look for ways to upgrade their roster even more this offseason to chase a playoff spot next season. Kings predicted to trade Malik Monk to Lakers With this in mind, SB Nations’ Jacob Rude recently released a mock trade that would send Malik Monk to the Los Angeles Lakers for two players. In the trade, the Kings would land Gabe Vincent, Maxi Kleber and a lottery protected 2031 first-round pick from the Lakers in return for Monk. This trade does not make a ton of sense for the Kings as they would swap one of the best scorers on their roster for two veterans who struggled last season and a lottery protected first-round pick. Both Vincent and Kleber would be solid additions to the Kings’ roster as they would fill two glaring holes in their rotation, but Sacramento would likely want more in return for Monk, especially with him coming off the best season of his career. Because of this, it is highly unlikely that the Kings would agree to this trade as they could possibly receive a larger return for their veteran guard from another team this offseason.
The Milwaukee Brewers looked as though their hot stretch was going to end on Sunday, when the New York Mets jumped to a 5-0 lead. It was certainly not one of Quinn Priester’s best starts, as the right-handed hurler allowed six earned runs on 10 hits (including two home runs) while recording only two strikeouts and issuing a walk across 4 1/3 innings of work on the mound. It was an especially frustrating individual performance for Priester, considering how great he was in a previous start. Last Monday, Priester went seven innings long and gave up just an earned run on two hits in a 3-1 victory over the Atlanta Braves on the road. That was his 10th straight pitching win, and the streak appeared to be on the verge of getting broken in the Mets game. Fortunately for Priester, Milwaukee’s bats came alive just in time to secure another team victory — and keep Priester’s streak going. Priester speaks up on Brewers’ thrilling win against the Mets The Brewers managed to pull off a come-from-behind 7-6 victory, capped by a solo, walk-off home run by rookie sensation Isaac Collins. “It’s indescribable,” Priester said after giving up a season-high 11 hits (h/t Adam McCalvy of MLB.com). “They definitely made up for a lot of my miscues today, but it’s a team game. I love being a part of this team, because otherwise I wouldn’t be able to smile right now.” On the season, Priester is 11-2 with a 3.49 ERA and 1.24 WHIP through 22 appearances (17 starts). The Brewers have now won their last three series via sweeps, and they will look to keep it going with a three-game set coming up against the National League Central division cellar-dwelling Pittsburgh Pirates at home.
The Pittsburgh Steelers have quite an interesting quarterback room for the 2025 season. Of course, all the focus is truly on Aaron Rodgers and what he can bring to the team at this stage in his career. Behind him, the Steelers have Mason Rudolph serving as the primary backup. Skylar Thompson and Will Howard are competing for the third spot on the depth chart, but unfortunately for Howard, an injury has slowed his progress. Thompson took advantage of the opportunity, performing well in the first preseason game and possibly reclaiming the QB3 role. Before his injury, Howard had previously moved ahead of Thompson in the competition. Former teammate of Rudolph, Ben Roethlisberger, recently shared his honest thoughts about the veteran quarterback’s performance against the Jacksonville Jaguars. Roethlisberger, who spent years with Rudolph during his time in Pittsburgh, had a unique perspective on how his former understudy handled the game. While Roethlisberger acknowledged there were some areas where Rudolph could improve, he also praised his composure, decision-making, and ability to move the offense when needed. Roethlisberger discussed Rudolph’s performance on his Footbahlin podcast, noting that the veteran looked confident and in control despite limited opportunities. "You know I thought Mason [Rudolph] played really well," Roethlisberger said on his podcast. "I thought he did exactly what you would hope to see from your backup quarterback. He went out there I think, he solidified himself… as the two." He pointed out that Rudolph’s familiarity with the Steelers’ system allows him to step in without disrupting the flow of the offense. With Rodgers leading the way, Rudolph providing a steady backup presence, and the QB3 competition between Thompson and Howard continuing, the Steelers’ quarterback depth will be a storyline worth following as the 2025 season approaches. "Let’s see how he does this week and the next week," Roethlisberger said. "I thought he played really well. I thought he was efficient with the ball. He threw the ball down the field. As a team, you like seeing that because that gives you confidence going into the season that if something were to happen one game for Aaron… you have a guy that you feel confident who could go in there. Same thing when we had Charlie Batch, you had Bruce Gradkowski, you had Byron Leftwich, you had Dennis Dixon and Josh Dobbs. Any of those guys. You just feel confident he can go in and just get it done for you." Roethlisberger had high praise for Rudolph, and hearing him mention him alongside names like Charlie Batch shows he has faith in Rudolph’s ability to be a reliable backup in Pittsburgh. There is a strong argument that Rudolph is one of the most dependable backup quarterbacks in the NFL, which is a significant asset for the Steelers in the 2025 season. Steelers' Mason Rudolph Has Great Preseason Game Versus Jaguars Rudolph only attempted 10 passes on Saturday night against the Jaguars, but completed 90 percent of them. He threw for 84 yards and one touchdown. While preseason football can be difficult to evaluate, he performed well in roughly a quarter and some change of action. His efficiency and composure reinforced the notion that the Steelers have one of the league’s most steady and trustworthy backup quarterbacks heading into the regular season. Roethlisberger is confident Rudolph has now locked up his spot as QB2 for the 2025 season. Steelers fans are now super eager to get updates on when Howard will be back from his injury. Howard and Thompson will fight for the QB3 spot. What grade would you give Rudolph for his preseason outing against the Jaguars?
