Could move to L.A.-based team be right for 12-time All-Star?

Veteran guard Chris Paul spent the 2024-25 season with the San Antonio Spurs. He appeared in all 82 games and undoubtedly played a key role in the development of big man Victor Wembanyama and guard Stephon Castle.

However, Paul's tenure with the franchise has come to an end. He is an unrestricted free agent this summer. At 40 years old, it's unlikely Paul will take a contract just to stay in the league. If he chooses to continue playing, his next landing spot must make sense for his own needs.

During a recent appearance on "The Pat McAfee Show," Paul noted how he's been away from his family for the past six seasons.

"It’s with my family more than anything," Paul said. "...My son just turned 16. My daughter is 12. The past six seasons, I’ve lived without them. I go to San Antonio, Phoenix, Golden State — they were in Houston with me — Oklahoma City … I’ve been around a few teams, but I’ve been away from them the last six years. It’s a little different. That’s the conversation."

During the episode, Paul also revealed that his family is based in Los Angeles. Therefore, a move back to the City of Angels could be enough to tempt him into playing for another season. The LA Clippers and Los Angeles Lakers are expected to be contending teams next season. Paul could be tempted by the chance to add a championship ring to his resume, while playing closer to home.

Even at his current age, Paul is still good enough to command a spot on a contending team's roster. He's also proven willing to come off the bench, as he did for the Golden State Warriors in the 2023-24 season. Both the Lakers and Clippers could do with an additional ball-handler off the bench, especially one as talented and experienced as Paul.

Therefore, the respective front offices should pick up the phone to contact Paul's agent. Otherwise, an illustrious and Hall of Fame-worthy career could come to an abrupt end this summer, and in that scenario, the NBA and its fans will lose a true star of the game.
