Absurd travel issues plaguing NASCAR teams as they attempt to make trip to Mexico City

Travel delays are already having an effect on NASCAR's race weekend in Mexico City.

With drivers, teams and other NASCAR personnel attempting to fly to Mexico City on Thursday, travel issues have popped up and will affect the weekend schedule for on-track activity.

Mechanical issues with a plane carrying NASCAR personnel forced NASCAR to try to find a plane for those individuals that was authorized to fly across the border. According to reporter Matt Weaver, those who were on the plane that suffered the mechanical issue were told by NASCAR to return to their homes or their race shop.

Haas Factory Team, which fields two entries in the NASCAR Xfinity Series and one in the NASCAR Cup Series, had their personnel drive to the Atlanta airport — approximately a 246-mile drive — in an effort to find a commercial flight to Mexico City. According to Weaver, those personnel — which include their three drivers, three crew chiefs and two car chiefs — won't arrive in Mexico City until 7 a.m. local time on Friday.

Xfinity Series driver Ryan Ellis said in a social media post that his commercial flight on American Airlines has been delayed multiple times.

With many personnel seemingly unable to get to Mexico City at a reasonable time before on-track activities begin, NASCAR made several changes to the weekend schedule, which include moving up a NASCAR Mexico Series race now scheduled for Friday morning and moving back the previously scheduled NASCAR Cup Series practice sessions. Meanwhile, all on-track activity for the Xfinity Series — which includes a consolidated, 50-minute practice session as opposed to the two sessions originally scheduled — will be held on Saturday, while Cup Series qualifying and the second Mexico Series race of the weekend also change times.

Sunday's NASCAR Cup Series race remains scheduled for 3 p.m. ET, with coverage on Prime Video, MRN and SiriusXM NASCAR Radio.
