KJ Edwards wasn't expected to make a commitment until Aug. 2. It was also expected that Carthage, Texas, product was going to end up committing to the Texas Longhorns.
Surprise, surprise. A double surprise. On Tuesday, Edwards did two shocking things.
First, he announced a commitment well before he was expected to. Second, and more shocking to the recruiting world, was the fact that he announced a commitment to Mike Elko and the Texas A&M Aggies.
He's coming off an official visit to College Station this past weekend, and that visit was apparently enough for him to decide to shut it down.

To say that this is a massive recruiting win for Texas A&M would be an understatement. Alabama, Baylor, SMU and LSU were also in the running, but this was supposed to go the Longhorns' way. Texas was the favorite in Edwards' recruitment up until the very last minute.
Perhaps the signs were always there, though.
“There is no telling where A&M can go under Coach Elko,” Edwards had told On3’s Chad Simmons in March. “They improved a lot this season. My connection with coach Troop (Trooper Taylor) is strong too. Both of them reach out to me and my family which is a big deal.”
Texas A&M is getting a top running back recruit and a winner in Edwards.
He rushed for 1,789 yards and 23 touchdowns as a junior for Carthage High School while adding three touchdowns as a receiver. He was a huge part in Carthage winning the Class 4A-Division II state title.
Edwards is ranked as the No. 2 running back in the 2026 class, according to 247Sports. The 247Sports Composite ranks him as the No. 42 recruit overall.
