Tuesday’s game between the Indiana Fever and the Connecticut Sun got ugly in a hurry.

During the third quarter of the WNBA Commissioner’s Cup contest at Gainbridge Fieldhouse in Indianapolis, Fever superstar Caitlin Clark was being defended by Sun guard Jacy Sheldon. As Clark was dribbling the ball inside the three-point arc, Sheldon caught Clark in the eye with her hand.

Clark then proceeded to give Sheldon a shove, which led to Sun teammate Marina Mabrey retaliating against Clark. Mabrey pushed Clark down to the ground before referees stepped in to intervene.

When the dust had settled, Sheldon was given a flagrant foul for her initial contact on Clark. Mabrey was also given a technical foul but notably was not ejected from the game.

Meanwhile, both Clark and Sun center Tina Charles (who was also involved in the mix there) were given double technical fouls as well. That ultimately resulted in three total free throws for Clark (two from the flagrant foul and one from the net technical count). Clark ended up making all three of those free throws.

Tensions had been building during Tuesday’s game. In the first half of the contest, Clark and Sheldon had already gotten into it with each other (with Clark ultimately giving Sheldon a push). The situation only escalated from there in the second half with Sheldon hitting Clark with a flagrant foul, Clark pushing her again and Mabrey ultimately pushing Clark to the floor.
