With pressure to find a spark and salvage their series with the Seattle Mariners, the Boston Red Sox jumped out in front early at T-Mobile Park on Wednesday afternoon.
In the top of the second inning, Marcelo Mayer smoked a pitch to the opposite part of the ballpark. Mayer's ball comfortably got over the fence in right field.
Not known for his power, the rookie third baseman from Chula Vista, California now has four home runs in his MLB career. Mayer's four long balls came in his 57th MLB at-bat and in his 21st game played.

Mayer's last home run came on June 11 when he hit two in the same game against Tampa Bay. He's now hit a pair of homers at home and a pair on the road.
Unfortunately for the Red Sox, they would squander the lead in the bottom half of the same inning and leave the frame tied 1-1.
Boston is looking to claim the series and rebound from an 8-0 loss on Tuesday. The winner of Wednesday's game will take the series since the Red Sox won the opener, 2-0.
Boston also can't afford to let any games slip away, as it entered the day just one game above .500. The Red Sox, entering Wednesday, held a 38-37 record and sit in fourth place in the American League East, 5.5 games out of first place. They were also a half-game back of Seattle for the last wild-card spot.
No matter what happens throughout the rest of the game in Seattle, Boston will stay out west and travel to San Francisco to meet the Giants in an ironic series following a shocking trade between the two teams.
Boston sent star designated hitter Rafael Devers, the lone remaining player from its most recent World Series championship team in 2018, packing to the west coast on Sunday. The decision to move Devers confused fans and media, coming off as a trade more designed for the future than to help Alex Cora win in 2025.
