Lakers sale could lead to the franchise's next golden age

The next golden age of the Los Angeles Lakers could soon be upon us.

On Wednesday, ESPN NBA insider Shams Charania reported that the Buss family have agreed to sell majority ownership of the Lakers to Mark Walter, CEO of TWG Global.

While that name might not sound familiar, his portfolio should. Walter is the controlling owner of the Los Angeles Dodgers, who have won two World Series titles under his watch and are routinely among MLB's biggest spenders.

Walter is also part of Chelsea F.C.'s ownership group with a stake just under 13%, per The Athletic. The English soccer club is the reigning FIFA Club World Cup champion and recently won the 2025 UEFA Conference League.

In 2016, the Los Angeles Sparks won their third WNBA Finals and first since 2002 in Walter's third season as owner.

Charania later revealed that Walter is paying a landmark $10B for the Lakers, making one thing clear: money is no obstacle.

Lakers legend and Dodgers co-owner Magic Johnson praised the news, writing on social media, "Laker fans should be ecstatic," and describing Walter as being "driven by winning, excellence and doing everything the right way."

"He will put in the resources needed to win," Johnson exclaimed.

While the NBA penalizes teams for going over the salary cap with harsh tax bills, Walter would seem to be the type of owner willing to go above the NBA's second apron without batting an eye if it meant giving the Lakers the best chance to contend for a championship.

With Luka Doncic, who has two years (including a player option) remaining on his current five-year contract, eligible for a four-year, $228.6M extension this offseason and Los Angeles needing to improve its front court, this could be an expensive summer in the City of Angels.

In that case, the Lakers should be in good hands. Walter has spared no expense delivering championships to his other franchises. After Wednesday, he has 10 billion reasons to want his new purchase to be just as successful.
