With the NHL buyout window opening this week, many expect a few teams to be making some moves to clear up some salary space ahead of free agency opening up on July 1.
Taking a look at teams with limited cap space for the 2024-25 season, the Dallas Stars seem to be a favorite to write off a couple of contracts soon. After signing forward Matt Duchene to a four-year contract extension, which carries an AAV of $4 million, the Stars have a measly $48,334 in cap space, according to CapWages. With a number of defensemen on sizeable contracts, general manager Jim Nill could be looking at buying out one of his players.
Other teams that are already close to next year’s $95.5 million salary cap include the Tampa Bay Lightning and the Colorado Avalanche, both of which have less than $2 million to play with at the moment.
Even teams with noticeable cap space might be willing to make even more room to hopefully score big fish in free agency or via trade during next week’s NHL Draft, with a number of players potentially on the move.
On Thursday’s edition of Daily Faceoff LIVE, Tyler Yaremchuk and Frank Seravalli discuss one team that could certainly be on the verge of buying out some contracts in the near future.
Tyler Yaremchuk: Have you heard anything on the buyout front? Do you think we could hear some noise in the next couple of days?
Frank Seravalli: I think when the buyout window opens, there’s a couple teams ready to pounce. The Dallas Stars, with one of those defensemen, I would think it’s probably [Matthew] Dumba. Just an easy, easy way to clear up $2.3 million in space without really having to think much about it. And when you don’t have any space, getting $2.3 million by signing a document is one way to do it.
