The Phillies announced that they have selected the contract of infielder Buddy Kennedy. Infielder/outfielder Weston Wilson has been optioned to Triple-A Lehigh Valley as the corresponding active roster move. To open a 40-man spot, right-hander Aaron Nola has been transferred to the 60-day injured list.
Kennedy, now 26, was acquired from the Tigers about a year ago. He exhausted his final option year in 2024 and was therefore out of options coming into 2025. He didn’t break camp with the club, which got him pushed onto the waiver wire. After he cleared waivers, the Phillies re-signed him to a new minor league deal. Matt Gelb of The Athletic reports that Kennedy had recently triggered an upward mobility clause in that deal. The Phils didn’t want him to get away, so they have added him to the roster today.
Since signing that deal, Kennedy has been in good form at the Triple-A level. He has appeared in 61 games for the IronPigs, hitting eight home runs with an 11.6% walk rate and 15.3% strikeout rate. That’s led to a .283/.388/.447 line and 126 wRC+, indicating he’s been 26% better than league average at the plate overall.
Triple-A success isn’t new for him but he hasn’t yet translated it to the majors. He has received scattered big league time from the Diamondbacks, Tigers and Phils, with a .203/.295/.313 line and 72 wRC+ in 149 trips to the plate over the 2022-2024 campaigns.
He has experience at all four infield positions and left field, so he should replace Wilson as the club’s multi-positional bench piece. That may not lead to a lot of playing time for Kennedy. Wilson was reinstated from the injured list about two months ago but has received only 42 plate appearances since then, including just one since June 9th.
As for Nola, he landed on the IL in the middle of May due to a sprained right ankle, though that’s no longer the main concern. It was reported just over a week ago that he would be shut down for two weeks due to a stress reaction in his rib cage. He’s now ineligible to return until 60 days from that initial IL placement, which would be mid-July. Even if he’s declared healthy in a week, he will need to ramp up his throwing and probably make a few rehab starts, so he likely wasn’t going to be back before the All-Star break anyway.

Red Sox-Orioles game gets delayed by bizarre alarm incident
The Boston Red Sox and the Baltimore Orioles may have fallen victim to a teenage prankster on Tuesday night. During the meeting between the two AL East division rivals at Fenway Park in Boston, Massachusetts. on Tuesday, the game was briefly delayed due to a strange alarm incident. It was the top of the eighth inning with the Orioles leading 3-1 when the incident occurred. In the middle of an at-bat by Orioles outfielder Dylan Beavers, loud alarms began sounding inside the ballpark. An automated voice could be heard telling fans to evacuate. Here is the video. A message then flashed on the big screen instructing fans to remain calm as stadium officials investigated the source of the alarm. The game resumed after only a minimal delay (with Beavers ultimately drawing a walk before the next two batters went down in order to end the half-inning). If anything, the alarm ended up working out in Boston’s favor as they tied the game in the bottom of the ninth inning on a two-run homer by newcomer Nathaniel Lowe. In any case, fire alarms and Boston sports are a tale as old as time. The New England Patriots used to be accused all the time of pulling the fire alarm on their opponents, and now it seems the Red Sox have gotten in on the “fun” too.
Shaquille O'Neal makes peace with longtime enemy — mostly
Shaquille O'Neal and Dwight Howard patched things up Sunday after years of feuding. But even while describing their rapprochement, O'Neal couldn't keep from teasing his longtime nemesis. The "Big Aristotle" was at the BIG3 playoffs Sunday to watch Howard's L.A. Riot play the Chicago Triplets. In the middle of describing to Rachel Nichols how he and Howard had made peace, O'Neal broke off his explanation to make fun of Howard for missing a dunk. The two Hall of Fame centers had sparred for years, despite their common ground as former members of the Orlando Magic and Los Angeles Lakers. Some of the tension seemed to be due to Howard adopting O'Neal's "Superman" nickname, though O'Neal claimed to Nichols that he was simply being tough on Howard to motivate him. That explanation doesn't account for the time O'Neal mocked Howard for playing basketball in the Taiwanese league or the decade-plus he's spent roasting Howard on his podcast, in public appearances and on "Inside the NBA." Still, it appears that the two have made peace. Despite O'Neal being left off the original list of presenters, he insisted that he'll be among a group of Hall of Famers inducting Howard Sept. 6, including Dominique Wilkins, Robert Parish, Dennis Rodman and Patrick Ewing. It means that two of the most dominant big men of their eras have finally buried the hatchet. It's added a new level of interest to the Hall of Fame ceremonies, and it should be a sweet moment between O'Neal and Howard. As long as Howard doesn't mention Superman.
Texas' Arch Manning reacts to grandfather Archie's 2026 NFL Draft prediction
Texas Longhorns quarterback Arch Manning should keep his family group chat updated about his decision for the 2026 NFL Draft. He doesn't want it tipping his plans, especially when they're not confirmed. Manning's grandfather, former New Orleans Saints QB Archie, told Texas Monthly his grandson isn't going to declare for the 2026 draft in a story published at the beginning of August. The 21-year-old passer, however, clarified he's keeping his options open. "I don't know where he got that from," Manning said Tuesday, via CJ Vogel of OnTexasFootball. "He texted me and apologized about that, but I'm really just taking it day-by-day right now." Manning attempted just 95 passes in his first two seasons at Texas but is already viewed as a potential No. 1 pick in the 2026 draft. In a story published Tuesday, The Athletic's Dane Brugler tabbed him as his top QB entering the season. Still, it would reportedly take a special circumstance for Manning to declare for the draft in 2026. He would want to play for a team that has a stable head-coaching situation and front office. Most franchises that are picking near the top of the draft don't have that. More importantly, Manning must prove he's worthy of the No. 1 pick. Despite his family name, he doesn't have a large enough sample size to show he's pro-ready. "If his last name were 'Smith' and he were a three-star recruit instead of a five-star blue-chipper, would he still appear this high early in draft rankings? Who knows," wrote Brugler. "However, what he has put on film so far has been very impressive. Now, scouts need to see it consistently each week, especially against the top opponents on Texas' schedule." Manning faces an elite opponent in Week 1. The No. 3 Ohio State Buckeyes host the No. 1 Longhorns on Aug. 30 at noon ET (Fox). The QB should probably tell his family to deflect questions about the draft until he's ready to make a decision. Speculation about his future could create even more pressure, which he doesn't need.
Green Bay Packers Predicted to Suffer Ugly ‘Low Point’ in 2025 NFL Season
The Green Bay Packers are just a little over two weeks away from kicking off their 2025 NFL campaign against the Detroit Lions. There are still areas that need polishing for the Packers, not to mention several players for them to cut. In any case, there are high expectations as usual for Jordan Love and company following an 11-6 campaign in 2024. The Packers managed to make the NFL playoffs despite starting off with a loss to the Philadelphia Eagles in Brazil and missing Love in the next two games due to injury. When he returned, the Packers suffered a loss in Week 4 at the hands of the Minnesota Vikings at home. But a strong 4-1 stretch heading into the bye in Week 10 and a three-game win streak following that rest gave Green Bay a nice boost that also allowed them to survive a 0-2 finish in the regular season. Green Bay Packers predicted to hit a setback against the Eagles Losses to the Eagles bookended the 2024 Packers season. Apart from their Week 1 loss to Jalen Hurts and company, the Packers also suffered a defeat in the wild-card round that eliminated Green Bay from Super Bowl contention. In a prediction by Ali Bhanpuri NFL.com, the Packers will once again lose to the Eagles in Week 10 in Philly. Bhanpuri also made the prediction that the Packers would have suffered just one loss before that meeting with the reigning Super Bowl champions. Low point: Week 10 at Eagles. Two of the NFC’s most successful franchises over the past decade or so square off in a huge prime-time showdown for both teams, who come into this matchup with identical 7-1 records — and the Eagles prove their superiority for the moment, ending the Packers’ seven-game winning streak. The emotional letdown gives this setback an edge in this category over being swept by the Bears for the first time since 2007.
