St. Louis Cardinals first baseman Willson Contreras lost his cool after his team's loss to the Chicago Cubs on Thursday, and he has since expressed regret over his actions.
The Cardinals were trailing 3-0 in the bottom of the ninth inning at Busch Stadium in St. Louis when outfielder Alec Burleson led off with a double. Cubs reliever Daniel Palencia then hit Contreras with a pitch to bring the tying run to the plate with no outs.
Palencia struck out the next three batters to get out of the jam. The right-hander was understandably excited and shouted something in the direction of Contreras, who took exception. Contreras then began jawing at Palencia, which resulted in the benches clearing.

Players on both sides cooled off pretty quickly and went their separate ways.
After the game, Contreras apologized for getting so upset. He said he was angry over being hit by a pitch and told Palencia to "throw strikes."
"My reaction was bad. I apologize to the Chicago Cubs for the way I reacted. … I don’t want to fight them," Contreras said, via Derrick Gould of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.
The 33-year-old Contreras played seven MLB seasons for the Cubs before signing with St. Louis as a free agent ahead of the 2023 season. He is batting .245 with 10 home runs and 50 RBI this year.
Palencia also spoke out after the game.
