The New York Mets continued their recent slump on Saturday afternoon by getting blown out by the Pittsburgh Pirates, 9-2, dropping the first two games of the series and now losing 12 of their past 15 games. It's one thing to be in a mid-season slump, but it's really starting to get concerning when you are getting blown out by one of the worst teams in the league and go into Sunday's game on the verge of being swept by them.
Perhaps that is why the Mets players decided to push one of the first panic buttons a team can push when things start to slip away — they held a players' only meeting after the game.
Nobody really went into much detail about what was discussed during the meeting, but shortstop Francisco Lindor tried to paint an optimistic picture of everybody still pulling for everybody else.
"Everybody is pulling for each other, there is a sense of urgency, everybody loves each other, everybody is on the same page."

On one hand, even good teams are going to hit a rut at some point over the course of a 162-game season. You're going to go through winning streaks, losing streaks, and it is never going to be a one-track situation for teams. You always have to fight through some adversity. The Mets are facing that right now, and are also dealing with some starting pitching issues and injuries.
Maybe Lindor is right and everybody is still on the same page and not letting the slump drag them down.
But anytime you have to get the "players' only meeting" called in the middle of the summer, it usually means things are going poorly and maybe starting to slip away.
It was only a little more than two weeks ago that the Mets were 21 games over .500 (45-24) and a 5.5 game lead in the National League East. Since then, that divisional lead has completely evaporated, and after Saturday's game, they trail the Philadelphia Phillies by half a game in the standings.
It's not a great time right now for the Mets. It might get even more desperate if they end up getting swept by the Pirates on Sunday.
