Even if LeBron James wants to continue playing indefinitely, his wife may have some other plans.
LeBron’s wife, Savannah James, apparently wants the Los Angeles Lakers star to retire within the next year or so, Shams Charania of ESPN reported on Sunday. Charania notes that LeBron and Savannah went out to dinner last week in New York with some friends (including LeBron’s old teammate Kevin Love).
One of the other guests, Charania says, posted a video to Instagram of the dinner in which LeBron could supposedly be heard saying, “[Savannah] wants me to f—ing retire in the next year or so.”
Now 40, LeBron just completed his 22nd NBA season. He averaged 24.4 points, 7.8 rebounds and 8.2 assists per game over 70 total appearances and certainly looks like he could still play for a good while longer.
As for Savannah, 38, she was LeBron’s high school sweetheart and has been by his side every step of the way in the NBA. They have been married since 2013 and share three kids together — Bronny (20), Bryce (18) and Zhuri (10).
LeBron just made the decision to pick up his sizable player option for next season with the Lakers. As such, he is not currently under contract beyond the 2025-26 season, paving the way for a potential retirement.
Earlier this weekend, LeBron’s longtime agent Rich Paul raised some doubts about the four-time NBA champion’s future in Los Angeles. Now it sounds like LeBron’s overall NBA future will only last for one more year, at least if his wife gets her way.
