Tigers' Tarik Skubal makes more history in latest dominant performance

Something that should surprise no one at this point, ace Tarik Skubal led the Detroit Tigers to a win on Sunday. In a game that Detroit only managed to score three times, Skubal's latest gem sparked the Tigers' 3-0 victory over the Minnesota Twins as they claimed their weekend series.

Rebounding from a bit of an "off" performance that saw Skubal give up four runs in his last start against the Athletics, he dominated Minnesota all day long to earn his 10th win of the season.

Skubal pitched a seven-inning one-hit shutout, letting only two base runners aboard while striking out 13. Skubal's 13 strikeouts matched his season-high that he also reached on May 25 in a win over the rival Cleveland Guardians.

For an astonishing fact, Skubal became the first Tigers pitcher to ever strike out 13 while allowing no more than one hit in a game in history.

Overall, through 17 starts, the American League Cy Young favorite is 10-2 with a 2.15 ERA, a 0.83 WHIP and 138 strikeouts. Skubal has won every outing of the month, going 5-0 and recording 39 strikeouts.

Giving Skubal all the support he needed, right fielder Kerry Carpenter blasted a solo shot for his 16th home run in the first inning. He later sent another run home via a triple. Riley Greene added his 63rd RBI as Detroit scored three runs off 10 hits.

After an up-and-down first four seasons, Skubal has managed to take his remarkable breakout 2024 season—he went 18-4 with a 2.39 ERA and 228 strikeouts—to another level this year.

Up next for the 53-32 Tigers, as they are now tied with the Dodgers for the most wins in baseball, is a three-game interleague series in Washington, D.C. against the Nationals.

Detroit sits extremely comfortably with an 11.5 game lead in the American Central.
