Aaron Judge got drilled in the face by his own teammate

New York Yankees outfielder Aaron Judge dealt with an injury scare Saturday caused by his own teammate.

Judge and the Yankees were leaving the field after the bottom of the fifth inning of Saturday’s game against the New York Mets at Citi Field in New York, N.Y. Shortstop Anthony Volpe turned around to throw a baseball in Judge’s direction, which is not unusual. In this instance, Judge was not paying attention, and Judge was hit in the face with the thrown ball.

A view from SNY’s broadcast showed that the throw actually hit Judge hard enough to knock his sunglasses off his face. The resulting cut required a facial bandage, but Judge did remain in the game.

This just about sums up how things have been going for the Yankees lately. The team is 6-15 in their last 21 games. Judge can hardly be blamed for that, as he entered play Saturday hitting .365 with 32 home runs in what is proving to be his best statistical season yet. In contrast, Volpe is hitting just .222, and has become a target of criticism among Yankee fans for his poor play this year.

Fortunately, this proved to be a brief scare as opposed to anything serious. It probably runs counter to their manager’s assertion about them being the best team in the league, though.
