Four-star QB vowing to put Kentucky Wildcats 'back on the map'

Matt Ponatoski is happy with what he's seen from Mark Stoops and the Kentucky Wildcats, but feels there's another level to be reached in Lexington.

The four-star quarterback from Cincinnati, Ohio, committed to Kentucky over the weekend, and he's ready to do big things for the Wildcats.

“I think I can go in there and not turn the program around, they’ve been doing good things, but put it back on the map," he told Steve Wiltfong of Rivals regarding his decision.

Ponatoski is one of the better quarterbacks and overall athletes in the nation. Rivals ranks him as the No. 9 quarterback in the country and No. 100 prospect overall. He's also a strong baseball prospect, and the Wildcats recruited him to play both football and baseball in Lexington.

That was a major part of his decision to commit to Kentucky over the likes of Alabama, Oregon and Arkansas, amongst many others. He's also eying a shot at playing in MLB, and Kentucky's openness to his desire to be drafted was another reason he felt comfortable with the Wildcats.

“It’s definitely something I’m looking at,” Ponatoski said of the MLB draft. “Not because money is a huge thing, but if it’s the right money slot, the teams I’m talking to for football and baseball understand it’s definitely a possibility. I’ll have to keep communicating with them and make my decision when the time comes.”

Baseball America ranks him as the No. 16 high school baseball prospect in the 2026 class. He's an infielder and also pitches.

On the football field, he was the Ohio Mr. Football, Gatorade Ohio Player of the Year and MaxPreps Ohio Player of the Year as a junior in 2024. He threw for   3,456 yards and 57 touchdowns compared to just three interceptions.

“They said it’s been basic the last few years and need a guy to run the system," Ponatoski said of playing quarterback at Kentucky. Coach [Bush] Hamdan walked me through what it would look like and the situation to come in and play quarterback there. It’s really exciting what we can do."
