Brian Cashman reveals what Yankees are seeking at trade deadline

The New York Yankees entered play on Wednesday 50-41 and second place in the AL East amid a recent stretch of losing. The team is looking to make some additions ahead of the July 31 trade deadline, and general manager Brian Cashman shared on Wednesday what areas he’s looking to upgrade.

Cashman said that he would like to add some starting pitching.

“I’m definitely going to be looking for upgrades if I can. That doesn’t guarantee anything. We’ve lost three starters out of our World Series rotation so far this year, so I’ve got to look and see if I can find a starter,” Cashman said, via Bryan Hoch.

“I’d certainly love to import a starter, some relievers because our bullpen has been taxed with injuries, and an infielder if possible. That’s a long list. I don’t know if this will be a deep deadline or not. I don’t know how active we will be. But I can tell you that we will try to import improvements. That’s the gig.”

Pitchers Gerrit Cole, Clarke Schmidt and Jake Cousins are all out for the season. Marcus Stroman is just coming back from a knee injury, and Luis Gil is working his way back from a strained lat injury.

As far as infielders go, the Yankees are moving Jazz Chisholm Jr. to second base and decided to designate DJ LeMahieu for assignment. Third baseman Oswaldo Cabrera is on the 60-day injured list, while Oswald Peraza is batting just .157 this season. Cashman did not specify which infield position they would like to add, but there is little doubt that the Yankees would like to bring in a third baseman.

Last year’s team made it to the World Series before losing to the Dodgers. Cashman is hoping to at least get back to the Fall Classic in 2025.
