Two Oklahoma schools featured in college football hot seat rankings

The idea of a "hot seat" is an interesting thing in the world of college football because things can change so quickly.

For instance, there's a case to be made that Ohio State head coach Ryan Day was in the hot seat after his fourth-straight loss to Michigan this past season. His Buckeyes then went on to make a run through the College Football Playoff to win the whole darn thing. Even still, some people believe he's under massive pressure heading into 2025.

College football is a big business, and winning or losing big games impacts the bottom line.

Shehan Jeyarajah of CBS Sports recently revealed a ranking of coaches he believes are on some sort of hot seat heading into 2025. Interestingly enough, the state of Oklahoma was well represented because the head coach of the Oklahoma Sooners, Brent Venables, and the head coach of the Oklahoma State Cowboys, Mike Gundy, both made the cut.

Both Gundy and Venables were ranked in the "now or never" category, meaning they have to start winning big games or their jobs could be on the line in 2025.

"Oklahoma hired Venables to get SEC-ready, and the program responded with its worst run of the 21st Century," Jeyarahah wrote. "The Sooners have suffered two losing seasons in three years and face another tall task in SEC play. The main reason for optimism is the transformative investments in quarterback John Mateer and running back Jaydn Ott. The pieces are there to succeed, but Venables has to do it."

Venables is 22-17 in three seasons so far at Oklahoma and the Sooners are 0-3 in bowl games under his watch. If he can't get it done with John Mateer at quarterback this season, there's a case to be made that he'll never win big in Norman.

As far as Gundy is concerned, Jeyarahah believes his long tenure in Stillwater may not save him from another bad season after the Cowboys went 3-9 last season.

"What a bizarre situation for one of the greatest college football coaches of the 21st Century. The wheels finally fell off at Oklahoma State last season, culminating in a disastrous 3-9 campaign," Jeyarahah wrote. "The offseason didn't inspire much optimism and the coordinator hires are mediocre. But can Oklahoma State really fire Gundy, the face of the program? I'd prefer not to find out."

Gundy is 169-88 overall at Oklahoma State since 2005. He's led the Cowboys to some of the biggest wins in program history and they're seemingly always one of the better teams in the Big 12. Heck, with Oklahoma and Texas in the SEC, there's a world in which OSU should dominate the Big 12.

Perhaps that's why Gundy is on this list, because in year one of the new-look Big 12, the Cowboys finished dead last.

Gundy has a ton of goodwill built up at Oklahoma State, but another season like that may not be tenable.
