Diamondbacks reportedly ready to sell with eye toward 2026

The Arizona Diamondbacks are reportedly ready to raise the white flag for 2025.

According to USA Today's Bob Nightengale, executives around Major League Baseball expect the Diamondbacks to be sellers ahead of the July 31 trade deadline. Pitchers Zac Gallen and Merrill Kelly, first baseman Josh Naylor and third baseman Eugenio Suarez are reportedly available.

The Diamondbacks have been one of the bigger disappointments in the league this season. Just two years removed from a World Series appearance, Arizona entered Sunday with a 46-50 record, 6.5 games out of a playoff spot. The Diamondbacks are also in a difficult spot looking ahead with nine players eligible for free agency, headlined by Gallen, Kelly, Naylor and Suarez.

Kelly may be one of the better pitchers available as the trade deadline approaches. The 36-year-old has posted a 3.41 ERA and a 1.054 WHiP in his 111 innings, striking out 107 batters with 29 walks. He would be a solid middle-of-the-rotation arm for any playoff hopeful.

Gallen, meanwhile, is in the midst of the worst season of his career. He has posted a 5.40 ERA and a 1.374 WHiP over his 115 innings, striking out 110 batters with 45 walks in what has been an inconsistent year ahead of free agency.

Suarez may be the best power hitter available. He has posted a solid .249/.318/.568 batting line in his 387 plate appearances entering Sunday, belting 31 homers while driving in a National League-leading 77 runs. 

Naylor may not have the same power numbers as Suarez this season, but he slugged 31 homers in 2024. He has produced a .295/.364/.460 batting line in his 364 plate appearances, hitting 11 homers and 18 doubles while stealing a career-high 11 bases.

The Diamondbacks may not have to wait for a trade. Nightengale reported that the Mariners are interested in both Naylor and Suarez. If the Diamondbacks are ready to sell, they could be one of the busiest teams ahead of the trade deadline.
