Chase Briscoe compares Shane van Gisbergen to Michael Jordan after Sonoma

Shane van Gisbergen is undeniably the best road-course racer in NASCAR at the moment, and after battling him for the win at Sonoma Raceway all afternoon, Chase Briscoe knows it.

Briscoe finished 1.128 seconds behind van Gisbergen in second-place after van Gisbergen led 97 laps en route to his third win of 2025.

"I've never played against Michael Jordan, but I imagine this was very similar," Briscoe said, per ESPN. "That guy is unbelievable on road courses. He's just so good. He's really raised the bar on this entire series."

Following Sunday's race, van Gisbergen is tied with Kyle Larson, Denny Hamlin and Christopher Bell for the most wins in the Cup Series this season with three. Van Gisbergen also dominated at Mexico City and Chicago, and he'll undoubtedly be the favorite when the Cup Series rolls into Watkins Glen and the Charlotte Roval for the final two road-course events of the season.

Van Gisbergen has clearly become the best road racer in the Cup Series, and if he starts figuring out ovals over the second half of the season, he could be a dark horse to go on a deep playoff run.
