Former player teases potential coaching return of Nick Saban

Could one of the great head coaches in college football history be considering a return to the sidelines?

Greg McElroy, a former national championship-winning starting quarterback under Nick Saban, has heard from a person "in the know" that there is a belief that Saban will return to coaching.

The former Alabama QB said this on "McElroy and Cubelic in the Morning" on Monday:

"This is a little bit out of left field, but the question was asked of me .. .a very much in-the-know person that I have a lot of respect for and have spent a lot of time around, just really, really admire. They seem to think Nick Saban's not done coaching ... He's pretty adamant that he thinks Nick Saban will be coaching again."

However, when asked by Brett McMurphy of On3.com about a possible Saban return, McElroy said, "I don't think he's coming back. I think he's completely fulfilled with what he's doing, but some think he misses the competition and would consider coming back. But I don't buy that."

Despite the speculation, the return of Saban seems unlikely.

The seven-time national champion doesn't seem interested in the NFL. After he announced his retirement from Alabama, Saban was critical of the current climate of college football, so would he even want to return?

Some Alabama fans might be down on current Alabama coach Kalen DeBoer, but the Tide could be set for a bounce-back season. And where else would Saban want to coach?

It's hard to envision him coaching at another SEC program. If Saban did return, surely, he would want to coach somewhere he could win a national championship.

Maybe if Alabama had an opening in the next few seasons, a return could be possible. But outside of that, or trying his hand in the NFL again, it feels like Saban has retired his coaching headset.

So while it might be fun to think about the G.O.A.T. returning to college football to chase more national championships, it's probably not happening.
