Commanders star wideout provides alarming contract negotiation update

Things were going too smoothly for the Washington Commanders.

On Tuesday, star wide receiver Terry McLaurin pierced what's been a positive offseason in the nation's capital with sharp words about his ongoing contract negotiations with the front office.

"I've been pretty frustrated, I'm not going to lie," McLaurin told reporters a week before Commanders veterans are set to report to training camp at OrthoVirginia Training Center at Commanders Park in Ashburn, Virginia.

Per The Athletic's David Aldridge, McLaurin revealed he hasn't spoken with team officials about an extension in over a month.

The six-year NFL veteran is entering the final year of a three-year, $68.4 million ($28 million guaranteed) extension he signed in June 2022. Coming off arguably his best season and with no security beyond 2025, it's reasonable for McLaurin to want to get a deal done. Entering his age-30 season, this is likely McLaurin's last opportunity to get a massive contract before becoming another Father Time victim.

It's also imperative for the Commanders to keep their best skill-position player happy.

The two-time Pro Bowler had a career-high 13 receiving touchdowns in 2024, his first with Jayden Daniels as his quarterback, last year's Associated Press Offensive Rookie of the Year. The Commanders experienced their most successful season in 33 years last season, going 12-5 and reaching the NFC championship game.

This offseason, the front office made a bold push to capitalize on the positive momentum, acquiring wide receiver Deebo Samuel in a trade with the San Francisco 49ers and left tackle Laremy Tunsil from the Houston Texans.

The last thing Washington needs is a prolonged contract dispute with McLaurin. As integral as he is, there should be some urgency in ensuring he remains beyond 2025. But according to McLaurin, this dispute might not have a quick resolution.
