Chargers WR Mike Williams retires from NFL after eight seasons

According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter , Mike Williams has officially announced his retirement from the NFL, just before the Los Angeles Chargers kick off training camp on July 23.

At 30 years old, the veteran wideout has officially informed the team, with his agent relaying the message.

Williams was drafted seventh overall by the Chargers in 2017. Williams quickly became a major downfield threat, boasting a unique blend of size, playmaking ability and tracking skills. Williams put together a solid career, with 330 receptions, 5,104 receiving yards and 32 touchdowns.

After being released by the Chargers in 2024, Williams would sign with the New York Jets, where he managed just 12 catches for 166 yards across nine games. He would move midseason to Pittsburgh, where he played another nine games and managed nine catches for 132 yards.

Williams signed a one-year deal to return to the Chargers in March, where it was thought that he would try to resurrect his career. He entered training camp on the PUP list before making his retirement decision. It comes as somewhat of a surprise, given his relatively young age. However, due to nagging injuries in recent years, it is understandable why he made this choice.

Williams will leave behind a legacy with the Chargers as one of their more explosive downfield threats when he was healthy. He persevered through injuries, including an ACL tear and a neck fracture. Though his time in the NFL was shorter than fans may have wanted, his highlight-reel plays will be remembered for years to come.

Now the Chargers offense has to turn its attention to replacing him. Williams was expected to play a role in their offense, though likely not a major one.

With a young receiving core including Quentin Johnston, Ladd McConkey and rookie Tre Harris, Los Angeles may be wise to seek free-agent veteran options. Fortunately, five-time Pro Bowler Amari Cooper and former Charger Keenan Allen are still on the market, and likely will be considered.
