It may be a matter of time before third baseman Eugenio Suarez is traded from the Arizona Diamondbacks. He has one particular destination in mind.
According to Evan Petzold of the Detroit Free Press, Suarez wants to be traded to the Detroit Tigers. He said that "to finish where everything started, that would be cool." Suarez also said that returning to Detroit would "mean a lot to me."
Suarez had originally signed with the Tigers as an international free agent in 2008. He appeared in 86 games for Detroit, posting a .242/.316/.336 batting line in 277 plate appearances, hitting four home runs and nine doubles before being traded to the Reds.
Since then, Suarez has emerged as a potent middle-of-the-lineup slugger. The two-time All-Star has hit 30 or more homers six times, including his 31 home runs in the first half of 2025. He has posted a .250/.320/.569 batting line in his 391 plate appearances and became the 19th player in MLB history to have a four home run game.
There is no guarantee that Suarez will come available before the July 31 trade deadline. The Diamondbacks entered the second half with a 47-50 record but are just 5.5 games out of the final wild-card spot. A strong start to the second half could turn the Diamondbacks into buyers at the deadline. However, the Tigers face the Cardinals, Astros, Pirates and Tigers ahead of the trade deadline, a difficult schedule for a team fighting for the postseason.
The Diamondbacks would likely get a significant haul for Suarez, even if they acquiesce to his wishes and trade him to Detroit. As the Diamondbacks will have numerous holes to fill this offseason due to free agency, trading Suarez, even if they are in the playoff hunt, could be the right move for the future.
