Scottie Scheffler's putting leads to historic Open Championship score

Arguably, Scottie Scheffler's biggest weakness has become his biggest strength at the 153rd Open Championship.

On Saturday, the world's No. 1 golfer maintained his lead atop the leaderboard at Royal Portrush, shooting a third-round four-under-par 67 to enter Sunday with a four-stroke lead.

Per the NBC broadcast, he tied the fourth-lowest 54-hole score in Open history at 14-under par.

Henrik Stenson (2016) and Cameron Smith (2022) hold the record for the lowest Open winning score at 20-under, while Stenson's 264 at Royal Troon is the fewest strokes in the major's storied history.

The way Scheffer is playing this weekend, he could certainly shoot another 64 on Sunday and break both records.

He hasn't produced a bogey in 25 consecutive holes and only three through the first three rounds. Scheffer had a ridiculous par save at No. 11 on Saturday, nailing an up-and-down off a brutal lie in thick brush after a poor second shot.

Earlier, he recorded an eagle on the par-5 seventh hole after six consecutive pars. Scheffer hit an outstanding approach shot 206 yards, and he made it count by converting the 10-foot putt to move to 12-under and break a tie with Matt Fitzpatrick.

If there had been one thing to nitpick about Scheffler's game, it would have been his putting. But it's responsible for putting him in a position to win his first Open Championship and fourth major overall.

Golf analyst Justin Ray noted that Scheffler has won nine consecutive tournaments in which he has held a 54-hole lead.

Most recently at the 2025 Genesis Scottish Open, Scheffler lost 0.32 strokes putting to the field in an eighth-place finish. (h/t DataGolf)

In his three most recent Open Championships, his putter also failed him as he lost strokes to the competition on the greens.

But not this time. Per TheOpen.com, Scheffler ranks first in strokes gained putting (7.87) through three rounds.

He's fifth in putts holed distance (306 feet), with his final birdie of Round 3 coming off a 14-foot putt.

"I feel good," a confident Scheffler told NBC Sports following his round.

He has every reason to be in good spirits entering Sunday's Open final round. With Scheffler's putter becoming his greatest asset, there might not be anyone who can get in his way of winning his first Claret Jug.
