Eugenio Suarez is in the midst of a fantastic season for the Arizona Diamondbacks. The veteran third baseman is fresh off his second career trip to the MLB All-Star Game, as he currently is tied for second in the NL in home runs (31) and is second overall in RBI (78).

The Chicago Cubs, likewise, are having a tremendous season at 58-39. The only obvious hole in an otherwise loaded Chicago lineup is at the hot corner, where the club has gotten pretty much league-low production to this point.
Rookie Matt Shaw has seen the majority of the time at third base for the Cubs. The first-round pick from 2023 has played solid defense and swiped 12 bases over 64 games, but his bat has simply not looked ready to square off against big-league pitching on a regular basis.
Shaw is hitting right at .200 with a meager .558 OPS and only two homers through 235 plate appearances. He may be the future at third, but the Cubs have to think in the now.
During a Friday appearance on MLB Network, insider Jon Heyman asserted that "Suarez is perfect" for the Cubs "because he has an expiring contract." Heyman continued, saying that "Suarez is really the guy that fits the Cubs."

As Heyman alluded to, Suarez is finishing up an eight-year contract that he originally signed with the Reds prior to the 2018 season. At 34 and still proving to be plenty capable with the bat, he is sure to land another nice contract during the upcoming offseason.
The Diamondbacks are not necessarily out of the NL playoff picture, but they have lacked consistency and stand 5.5 games out of the final wild-card spot at 48-50.
Per reporting from Bob Nightengale at USA Today, the Diamondbacks "will definitely be sellers at the trade deadline." The Arizona front office is making several of its top players available, with Suarez among them. In return, the organization desires some young arms for its pitching staff.
The Cubs will certainly have some competition for Suarez. The New York Yankees are at least one other contender in search of a boost at third base. Suarez's original team, the Detroit Tigers, could also attempt to plan a reunion with him.
