NBC golf analyst Smylie Kaufman had an embarrassing on-air moment while covering the second round of The Open Championship on Friday, and he has since addressed it on social media.
Kaufman is one of the on-course analysts for NBC's coverage of The Open Championship at Royal Portrush in Northern Ireland. The former PGA golfer was near the 15th green, getting ready to provide commentary on a Jon Rahm birdie putt, when there was an apparent technical difficulty.
Kaufman became flustered and could be heard on the air saying "what the f—?"
In a video he shared on social media after the round, Kaufman joked that he "made a double bogey" with his hot-mic moment.
"I guess there's a first for everything. First off, I want to apologize for the audio blunder that happened today to me on the 15th hole. I heard a pop in my ear. It went radio silent, which signals typically for me that my mic is down," Kaufman said. "Clearly it wasn't, so I want to apologize for what happened to the team and those listening, of course. We're gonna move past this one and it definitely will not happen again. Looking forward to a great weekend. Sorry, guys."
Hey yall! I made a double bogey at 15 today with a bizarre audio situation. Sorry about that as I clearly didn’t know I was on air ! Apologies and a lesson learned! pic.twitter.com/psCDnZfR2m

Kaufman's explanation makes sense, as he thought his microphone went out. He stopped talking in the middle of his sentence and thought the television audience could not hear him.
If something like that ever happens to Kaufman in the future, it is safe to assume he will do his best to avoid cursing.
