Los Angeles Chargers star quarterback Justin Herbert has been spotted make an interesting change at training camp, as he has been seen wearing red-tinted, UV-protection contact lenses to improve his vision on sunlit days. The lenses, which give off a red coloring, function like built-in sunglasses.
Instead of wearing a tinted visor, a tool that has felt impractical for players due to frequent cleaning, Herbert has found the contacts to be just as effective and more practical. Herbert debuted the new look during training camp, and addressed them during an interview with the media.
“They’re like sunglasses contacts, UV protectants…When I stepped into the huddle, I think a few people were a little surprised.” Herbert said to local media.

The contact lenses are designed to help block out sunlight during practices and games, which could potentially offer a serious edge to players. Instead of wearing an impractical visor that has to be cleaned throughout the game, the contacts would be a more practical alternative. However, as of now it is not clear whether the contacts will be allowed for use during the regular season. Herbert said he is waiting for confirmation on whether he can use them during actual games.
If the league gives Herbert the green light to wear the lenses, expect other players to follow suit and wear the contacts. Last year we saw several examples of sunlight getting in the way of players, especially in Dallas. If the contacts are allowed, this issue may be solved in a serious way.
Herbert and the Bolts are preparing for an important 2025 season after a great start to the Harbaugh era. For Herbert, this offseason will test his leadership as he is surrounded by a young core of talented wideouts. Perhaps with the help of UV protectant contacts, Herbert can lead this offense to new heights.
