Diamondbacks GM makes his trade deadline hopes clear

Arizona Diamondbacks executive vice president and general manager Mike Hazen wants nothing more than to shrink the potential market at the MLB trade deadline.

Of course, for that to happen, Hazen's Diamondbacks have to keep winning, solidifying their spot as potential postseason contenders in the National League.

On a Sunday appearance on MLB Network Radio, Hazen discussed the number of calls he has been getting from other teams about potential Arizona trade pieces, including third baseman Eugenio Suarez, first baseman Josh Naylor and starting pitcher Zac Gallen.

Those calls, Hazen said, have been looking at the Diamondbacks as a seller at the upcoming trade deadline, set for July 31 at 6 p.m. (Eastern). However, Arizona entered Sunday as winners of three consecutive games to up its record to 49-50, just 4.5 games out of the final NL wild-card spot.

Hazen said in the interview that he sees the Diamondbacks as "probably, right now, still buyer-seller." He added that he hoped "to switch that dial firmly in the other direction. But right now, we're in a pretty precarious situation."

After Sunday's series finale at home against the St. Louis Cardinals, the Diamondbacks welcome the Houston Astros to the desert for three games beginning on Monday. After an off day, the Diamondbacks travel to Pittsburgh and Detroit for series before the trade deadline.

That schedule, along with Arizona's remaining matchups against their NL West foes that are ahead of them in the standings (Los Angeles Dodgers, San Diego Padres and San Francisco Giants) holds the potential for plenty of potholes as Arizona tries to envision a road forward to the postseason.

On July 13, USA Today MLB insider Bob Nightengale reported that Arizona "will definitely be sellers at the trade deadline according to rival executives." However, the Diamondbacks have responded with victories that have potentially muddied the waters for that projection.

Three teams, including the division rival Giants, are currently outside of a wild-card spot and ahead of Arizona in the standings.

Suarez, Naylor and Gallen are all free agents next season, making Arizona's decision leading up to the deadline even more interesting.
