Jonas Valanciunas was traded to the Denver Nuggets in a deal that sent Dario Saric to the Sacramento Kings. The trade, from Denver's standpoint, gives the franchise a reliable backup to star big man Nikola Jokic.
Valanciunas just completed his 13th season in the NBA. He's a proven big man, both as a starter and as a backup. Last season, he suited up for 81 games, averaging 10.4 points, 7.7 rebounds and 2.0 assists with the Washington Wizards and Kings.
Unfortunately, Valanciunas' addition to Denver has caused an unforeseen headache. Reports began to surface that the veteran big man was considering leaving the NBA, with Greek team Panathinaikos reportedly interested in the veteran center.
"It's led to a confusing situation given that Valanciunas still has two years remaining on his NBA deal that would pay him a total of more than $20 million," ESPN's news desk wrote.
During a news conference on July 18, President of Basketball Operations Ben Tenzer provided a positive update on the Valanciunas situation.
"There's been nothing but healthy conversations in terms of him honoring his contract and him excited to be a Nugget," Tenzer said. "...No concerns."
The last thing Denver needed was a bizarre standoff with a player who is still under contract and was legally acquired by the franchise via a trade. Valanciunas is the ideal backup to Jokic, primarily due to his size and pace of play. He fits the system.
However, until Valanciunas is with the franchise and training with the team, concerns will likely persist over his immediate future. For now, though, it would appear the Nuggets are approaching things with the belief that Valanciunas is committed to the franchise and ready to go next season.
Therefore, Denver fans can begin dreaming of some potential success and put the strange saga to bed. At least, for now.
