Lakers make necessary roster cuts to acquire former DPOY

The Luka Doncic-ification of the Los Angeles Lakers continues to gather pace. Since the start of the summer, Rob Pelinka has added Deandre Ayton and Jake LaRavia to give Doncic the type of running mates he craves.

Next up is Marcus Smart, who ESPN's Shams Charania reported was signing a two-year $11 million deal with the franchise. Smart, 31, will provide tertiary playmaking, three-point shooting and elite on-ball defense. However, in order for the Lakers to make his addition official, they've had to cut two members of the roster.

On July 20, Charania reported that Los Angeles had parted ways with Jordan Goodwin. He followed Shake Milton through the Lakers' exit door.

“The Los Angeles Lakers have waived guard Jordan Goodwin,” Charania reported. “Goodwin emerged as a key rotation piece for JJ Redick late last season, playing 29 games and four playoff contests. Goodwin and Shake Milton were released to clear space for the arrival of Marcus Smart.”

Cutting Milton and Goodwin gives the Lakers the roster and cap space to make Smart's deal official. And while it may hurt to part with Goodwin, who was slowly carving out a role for himself on the roster, it was a necessary evil.

Smart is a proven winner in the NBA. Throughout his tenure with the Boston Celtics, he never missed the playoffs. Furthermore, he helped lead the team to the 2022 NBA Finals. Doncic will know what type of teammate he's getting. That's why he reportedly played such a big role in recruiting the recently injury-hit star.

Pelinka is giving Doncic the type of team he wants, and the type of team he believes can help him contend for a championship. Smart will have a big role to play in that quest for success, assuming he can stay healthy, of course.
